    ac compressor giving out?

    Hello.

Past couple days I used the AC and I noticed an odd sound while driving on the freeway. I thought nothing of it. The sound is hard to describe. However on the local roads when I waiting at a stop light, out of nowhere I here this weird "screeching" type of noise coming from my car and I'm confused as to what the sound was.

The best I can describe it is when a really old car starts to turn or pull out of a parking lot and you hear this screeching noise... some sort of friction of metal maybe. It's not the brakes. As soon as I turned off the AC button the noise went away. When I turned it back on after a few seconds the noise came back. A friend of mine suggested that either the ac belt was loose or the ac compressor may need to be replaced.

I'm wondering if anyone else here have experienced a similar problem and maybe point me in the the right direction to get it diagnosed w/out taking it to shop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys

Loose compressor belt, slipping compressor clutch, or a bad compressor. Start with a new belt correctly adjusted. If that fails to eliminate the noise move on the the clutch and/or compressor.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

ok thanks for the info. I had someone replace my timing belt, water pump, and the other 3 belts all the same day a few weeks ago so maybe the belt was not installed correctly? i dunno. I"ll find out
