M20 Cooling system wont bleed but not overheating?

    Hello all,

I have a 1987 BMW 325 that I have recently done a 2.7i conversion to, and I am having the weirdest issue. The car seems to run fine but seems I cannot get the air out of the coolant lines. all three large coolant hoses on the front of the engine are filled with air, not water.

To bleed the car I lifted the front end, and I crack the bleed screw and fill the reservoir until it wouldn't take any more. I have also taken off many of the coolant lines and manually fill them with water as best as I could. However, when the engine is running the lines again only are filled with air. I don't understand how there can be so much air in the system but yet the car is not overheating.

I plan to do a leak down test in the next couple of days as I am suspicious that perhaps the head or head gasket was not installed properly, but I'm not 100% sure that is the issue as a blown head gasket would usually cause overheating. I only get a little bit of white smoke coming out of the exhaust when first started but that also could be because it's cold outside currently there is no smoke from the exhaust when I rev the motor. I am also getting steam or smoke coming out of the coolant reservoir which seems interesting. The heater also blows warm air not hot but warm. My guess is that there is either a pressure issue or I have the coolant lines near the heater core hooked up incorrectly. Could this also be caused because I have an ETA water pump pulley instead of a 325i pulley currently, as that would make the water pump spin faster with the smaller pulley?

I am at a loss as to what the issue is oh, and I just want to get this car done. I have attached a link to a YouTube video showing the car. Also not sure why the valvetrain is so loud I have adjusted the valves TWICE. But it sounds like it’s just one valve. https://youtu.be/xZ9AEN_GeIk

    Thanks,

    Jacob

fill the cooling system with the cap off, but through the upper radiator hose. when coolant comes out of the expansion tank, connect the hose to the radiator, crack the bleed screw and proceed to fill as necessary.

make sure the recirculation hose from the top of the radiator to the expansion tank is free of debris and can breathe appropriately.
