    M30 Swap issues. Troubleshooters welcome.

Alright, so we're putting everything back together and we're hitting many issues. Nothing that we can't get around, but things that don't look right whatsoever.

    #1: Coolant hoses.

Since I am using the B35 block off plate in the rear, and there are no heater lines, the OEM M20 T-hose that runs from T-Stat housing, to heater hose, and T'ed off to Coolant overflow is now useless correct?

The only hoses I need to run are the two hoses from motor to radiator + one hose from Coolant overflow to T-Stat housing. If this is correct say aye. :p

    #2: Clearance.

I'm using custom mounts made from scratch, but from research, it seems like I am where position 2 would be. With the accessory belt pulley bolted on, there's literally 1/8" at best of distance from the radiator. Which quite honestly is fine... my M20 with aluminum radiator + low pro puller fans actually managed to be much much worse.

So I would assume since the motor sits to far forward, I should have no issues at the back right?

Well, the tranny sits too far back. So far back that the driveshaft is now about an inch too long even with the rear piece moved all the way to the CSB on the spline. The only way to line it up is by removing the guibo and bolting the driveshaft straight to the transmission. I've seen it done before although I would much rather not do it.

We measured the e28 front drive shaft to the e30 front piece and they are almost the same size, so it's definately the fact that the tranny is sitting too far back. But the motor is barely cutting it in the front being 1/8" away from the radiator.

    Issue #3: Exhaust clearance.

Just covering this subject, but the lower firewall (where the passenger foot goes) will have to be smashed to all hell regardless of what position you're in right? Sitting in my (assumed) position 2, I'm going to have to smash the living crap out of it (at least move it 3 inches back) to clear enough space to slide a downpipe to the headers for cyls 4-5-6.

I'm sure I'll find my way around these issues, but I'm curious to see if I'm the only one to reach these issues. I was certain that with my custom from scratch mounts that I would have an issue with either front clearance or back clearance...... never imagined I'd have to deal with those issues on BOTH ends. :p

We accept thoughts, criticisms, past experiences, suggestions, visa, mastercard, amex,...all welcome here. :)

    #1: aye. :)

You also need the hose from the water pump to the the t-stat housing though.

#2: The driveshaft needs to be shortened. I had this same problem using the same engine and transmission/driveshaft combo. I believe I took 1 3/4" out and it has been working fine.

Your shifter lines up fine, right?

#3: e32 down pipes *should* fit with no modifications to the car. They fit on mine perfectly and my engine is farther back. Not sure if you will need the manifolds as well, but they wouldn't hurt to have.

We recently made some e34 down pipes fit fairly easily on my friends car, and his engine sits like yours.

E32, or what I'm assuming B35 downpipes are 2 bolt flange. The M30B34 is a 3 bolt flange. I have the E32 downpipe but I'm going to have to cut the flanges off and weld them to the 3 bolt flange. Or we're going to rig something for now. But there's definately no clearance to slide in a downpipe to the rear header. Not on the 3 bolt design.

Can you explain how you shortened the driveshaft? The shop owner spoke to me about having to do it. I might not be able to do it within this week depending on how hard it is, but he suggested cutting the spline down about an inch or two.

      Shifter lines up fine. :)

Just read my first M30 swap thread where you posted that you'd shorten the spline as mentioned. I am going to look into that tomorrow.

Just one more item to my to-do list. Keeping lists of things to scratch off really helps me keep on point with my work, instead of just wandering about the car looking for things to do.

If you can, pick up some b35 manifolds as well. It will make your life way easier. The e32 dp's line up fairly well with the stock e30 exhaust too.

As for the driveshaft, I brought the front half of my e28 shaft to a local driveshaft shop and asked them to take (I believe) 1 3/4" out of it. They sectioned it up by the guibo flange and just welded it back together. They balanced it separate from the back half and I have no vibration issues.

Hey.. I used the b35 exhaust manifolds (two bolts) and downpipes from an e34 and they cleared ok with a bit of banging through the passengers floor behind the metal heat protector (ill post a pic later). and I also had my driveshaft shortened but, you should consider trying several combinations because your mounts are custom made (like mine) for example the e46 325i driveshaft front part fits perfectly to the e30´s DS rear part and has the larger guilbo neeed. in my case it was to short of a combination and ended up cutting the e46 flange off and soldering it to the e30 DS. worked ok since then, but should try other combinations. I measured how long of a front part DS would I need and went searching for bmw ds that fits the e30s.! What gearbox are you using?
