    Labor comparison M30 M50 swap

    Hello,
I see the cost difference in the 2 possible swaps (motors etc.) but how about labor? Do you need special mounts and trans for the M50 like the M30?

Basically I am trying to decide what way to go for my E30.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I have been reading a lot but still have not finalized my decision.

M30s are epic IMHO, But the M50 are easier to source parts for. And most of the process is pretty straight foward

It depends on what year and model you have. M50 swap requires a custom harness adapter that you can either make yourself or buy. The same is true with the m30 swap, but only for certain years of the e30. 1987 and later cars with m20 is plug and play with the m30 harness IIRC. There is no special transmission for an m30 swap.

They are probably both equally labor intensive, but in different ways. I would suggest deciding on a motor that suits you best then go that route. If possible take a ride in both m30 and m50 swapped e30's.

Whichever one you don't have to rebuild!

Main thing about M30 swap is getting or making engine mounts. The typical tranny is the M30 g260 (not m20), although some have used the g240 from the M10 cars. The tranny will dictate what driveshaft you'll need.
