    M30 ignition upgrades available?

has anyone here modified the ignition components on their M30's?
Not that there´s anything wrong with stock, but the distributor/rotor setup even though widely used seems so archaic and prone to failure. Hope I´m wrong about that last part. I´ll be swapping the M30 in next week.

archaic? The whole engine is archaic. wtf you talking about. :P

I have a cdi w/ high output coil.
Allot of people use wasted spark too.
    Coil packs, and individual coils.

They don't break by themselves, proven working technology.

Of course you could upgrade ignition like he did but no point in stock engine..

I´m pretty sure you were talking about the purple beauty above....
if not, however, there isn´t much to my car, it´s an M30B35 from an auto 1991 535i going into my 1991 318i 5spd. I hope the M30 won´t stay stock for long. So yeah, I´m considering options.

Yeah, I know, right? It´s kinda old.
So your setup uses one large coil replacing the distributor, and then coils on each plug? All controlled by a MSD unit or something similar? how about the wiring? is it crazy-complicated?

No. It's a msd 6al-2 and ss coil.
Wiring is just + and - for stuff like that.

If you want wasted spark the best thing to do is run megasquirt.
                It's a aftermarket ecu.
Fully assembled MegaSquirt, MS3Pro, MSPNP engine management systems, stand alone fuel injection and high performance parts for tuning your racecar!

a write up using the easy to get GM packs.

Well, it all can be found on PPF (pure performance factory, swedish site with lots of +1000hp BMW turbos) :)

Anyways, the guy went to dyno and pulled 666hp on the wheels with 1,5bar boost with normal V-power fuel.
Target is 3bar boost with E85 fuel, so it'll go far beyond 1000hp. And that's cool! :)

Very interesting sites. Thanks for the link. I stop by e30tech every once in a blue moon but never stumbled upon that particular thread.
What kind of improvement did you get when switched to MSD? better idle and responsiveness? a couple more horses?
That PPF site is cool also. I was going to chime in the forums, help the guys a little, but then I remembered my swedish is a little rusty....and I had some stuff on the stove...

Yeah, that´s the way to go. I don´t know how some people can sleep at night having only 600+ hp on the wheels....tsk!!!

Have you thought about using the stock cap cover if you
                          don't already have it?
Might help clean up the looks, or not.

Don't get a cdi. You're thinking too small.
0 power gain to $300 cost. Not a good ratio for you.

If you do keep stock just make sure coil and plug wires are within spec and the dizzy
is in good shape. Get a chip and headers.

Not to threadjack, but has anyone tried headers in an m30 e30? I was always under the impression that nothing out there would fit.
