Don't lift by your motor mount arms

I have to repull my M30 - my brother took on that project last night. the put the chain through the motor mount arms (as suggested by jaredsquires' excellent page).

2/3 of the cast iron cylinders that hold the threads for the motor mounts "exploded". I'm awaiting pictures of the damage, but I've never head of this before. I don't exactly know why it happened (and probably won't until I can inspect it in person) but I don't know what I'm going to do now and I wouldn't want to see someone else similarly disenfranchised.

They must have been cracked previously? It seems improbable that there is any other way they would just explode.

      any pics?

I'm still waiting on pics from my brother as well. I have to assume there is some level of user error or previous damage as well.

i used the bracket on the front of my engine and it tore out of the block....of course there was a ton of muddy oil and crud build up all over it, damn canadian winters.....

I wonder if the iron, renowned for ridiculous hardness and strength, isn't a little brittle, especially when cold. I just talked to my brother, he thinks it is salvageable, camera charging now. We may have used too-short bolts.

Big huge files - not compressed - right click save as blah blah blah

Looks salvageable to me :) I will probably drill the mount to actually use the other hole if possible.

Re: thread title - perhaps the message should be: use the correct bolts - seems mine must have been VERY short.

He was doing something screwy - the bolts would brake before the block, no?

One would think - I can't imagine the chain got that close into the block, but here we are. The damage on both mounts is like the bolt was too short and lifting straight through the mounting point, as far as i can tell. If the damage was DIRECTLY from the chain I'd imagine it would start at the bottom, unless the plate of the arm-mount was putting inordinate pressure in that direction for some reason.

Anyone know what these are? Can I tap them for threads maybe...? Specifically the bottom one.

I think the bottem one is just for a different type of mount they added to the mold but not tapped. If they are beefy like they the others I don't see why the hell not.

Good to know - I don't know that the position is even going to workwith the mount. The current plan is to try to reconstruct the originals and then slip a reinforcing steel sleeve over it. At least I can do more turbo shit while the engine is out :-/

                            dayum, that sucks!

how about drilling it out and putting a sleeve in it? Just a thought

I think I have a pretty slick solution lined up - I'll take pics. Since everyone knows M30s are bulletproof, it's gonna take more than this to derail my foolish little project
