If you can find a harness from an 89 535i you will be able to plug it right in, no modifications necessary. You will need a transmission from an m30, the m42 one won't bolt up.

don't spew nonsense if you don't know what you're talking about, please.

There have been a couple people who have run m10 transmissions with their m30 swap. The majority of people go with the m30 trans because it's beefier and will be able to hold the stress of the engine better.

The e28 M30, due to the same shift linkage as most e30s

I am in the process of aquiring all the parts to do the M30 into a '91 318i with the M42. Get the 89 e34 harness that way it mates right up to the c101. I am using the 260/6 tranny out of an E28 535i. 325e front drive shaft and 318i rear.

Got my intake and valve cover back from the powder coaters. They look sweet. Can't wait to get this thing in. Recently bought and e39 540i and have been driving that, drove the e30 318 yesterday for the first time in three weeks. It was sad, no power. Just a little bit more.

5speed from e24/e28 m30 cars, or from e34 535i cars (i don't remember if e32 735i cars came with 5speed or not, would work as well), is the way to go. although m10 g240 from the early 318i cars will bolt up as well but not sure how long it will last though...
