    m30b35 swap questions...

i have done so much searching lately I'm seeing cross-eyed and have mixed up some info between the m50 swap. i figured it would just be easier to start my own thread. i see some info about swapping from a 325, but none from a 318. i have decided to go with a m30b35 swap (almost went with the m50) but have a few questions.. it is going into a e30 318is which now has the m42 motor. it will be left bone stock.

    1. is there any difference between a 535 and 735 engine that i need to consider for this swap?
    2. which oil pan do i need? (ive seen referene to a 525 e34 pan [m30b34], but is that the same as the 535 e34 pan [m30b35] ?)
    3. would my Getrag 240 be ok? which driveshaft? which trans mount?
    4. does the brake booster have to be changed for clearance issues?
    5. i assume i need the complete dme harness and brain from the donor car since mine is a 4 cyl.?
    6. which radiator?

i assume since i have a 4.10 lsd diff, that that needs to be addressed also..

i know i need mounts and different throttle cable as well.
    anything else?

    thoughts?
    thanks,
    nOOb..

1 - some 735i cars had EML, meaning electronic throttle body. intake manifolds on those lacked one vacuum line fitting. other than that, same thing.

2- if you get the engine from an e32/e34 cars it will have the correct pump/pan. you need to swap the pan if you get an engine from anything other than e32/e34.

    3 - g240 from your late model 318 won't work at all. you need a g260 from a m30 car, OR if you MUST a g240 from an m10 car will work...but I wouldn't bother with that.

    4- no

    5 - yes

    6 - e24/e28 m30 radiator (thin).

anything else? yes, read the long Frank's m30 thread it's got all the info you'll need

The bellhousing at the very least. It has to bolt up. For example, I'm using a G265. It's out of a e30 m3. It too bolts up - but is a bit more expensive.

Also, what tranny you pick will determine what you're going to do about your drive shaft.

          All G265 from :

          535i, 635csi, 735i production year 1985 only,
          and from 528i, 633csi, 733i, 635csi Euro , year 1980 -1982.

The outer case is stamped 262, but it's actually 265 5-speed.

By going this route, you'll probably can get away from over rated M3 "mark up" for the exact same thing.

g240 from your car is not going to work period, m10 and m42s don't use the same tranny.

A 265 will require a shortened driveshaft correct?

Im using a m10 getrag 240 with no problems... yet. Spec stage 3 clutch, m10 flywheel, 325e driveshaft, s2.93 soon to be changed. So far so good and I drive hard!
                84' 318i m30b35 swapped!

I ASSUMED since they were both g240s that they were the same.

I read this from another site:

                  > A 4-speed manual was available for the 316 and 318i (Getrag 220). The 316, 318i, and 320i also had the option of a common 5-speed manual (Getrag 240) while the 323i and 325i had a different manual (Getrag 260). <

To me, that looks like the g220 and the g240 are interchangeable as they were an option on the same cars. What is different about them? What is different about the g240 on the m42 engine? Different bellhousing or such?

Anyway, thanks for answering. That is why I asked, because I dont know.. !

yes, different bellhousing. m10/m30 share the same...m42 does not.
