Any reason for not wanting to cut a driveshaft to the proper length?

i dont have a driveshaft specialty shop close to where i live thus im ordering from a far just to get the front section anyway . so id rather not have to buy send and pay double the price you know ? unless i could get my small guibo driveshaft cut down and have a big guibo end put on ?

It's a tough one. You may want to fit your guibo onto the tranny, and then carefully measure the total distance between guibo and diff flange. You can't use an e36 driveshaft are the front-rear length is totally different from an e30 unit. Once you have the total measure that you need, then I can measure what length is my spare e30 M3 driveshaft and let you know if it works. If it doesn't then you have NO choice than cut, weld and rebalance your own driveshaft.

And you need to send out th front and rear parts of the driveshaft so that the shop can balance it. Or have somebody with nearby driveshaft shop shorten a driveshaft, mark it then split it before shipping. Then youreassemble with the matching marks.

A large-guibo ETA driveshaft will work just fine unless you're using the Getrag 265 (the one with the removable bellhousing), which is ~3 inches longer than the e28 Getrag 260.

ETAs came with large guibos in '87.

This is what I did. Had the front half shortened and a large flange put on.

              Cake.

When getting a driveshaft shortened, how percise do you need to be when measuring it? To the closest 1/8 inch or more/less?

I have a shortened driveshaft for sale. I paid 600 bucks for it to be done. BMW driveshafts can't just be welded back together. They are fused. I would like to get 300 for it, but I can go lower. I honestly don't know what the length of it is, but I can find out for you. I am using an e28 trans(also for sale) and the engine is back far enough that I had "massage" the firewall for it to fit.

Wow. "Fusing" is expensive in Tenessee. I had a driveshaft shortened and balanced locally for $125.00

It wasn't done in Tennessee. It was shipped to California. There are no local places here in Tennessee that could do it. It wasn't just shortened and balanced. They rebuilt the whole thing. And they are fused. It is a form of welding, but not like most driveshaft shops do. It's not some guy with a 7018 running a bead with the shaft turning on a lathe. It's done with some expensive machines that turns one piece while the other is stationary, and they are brought close until they touch and once they reach a "plastic" state they are forced together.

                        Expensive!

It would be cheaper buying a new aftermarket shaft with rebuildable/greasable u-joints and then have THAT shorted.

With a G260/6 WITH THE THINNER OUTPUT flange and funkmasta's mounts I used a front half e28 535i 5spd driveshaft with the rear of a late model 325i driveshaft...Got em balanced together and it fits perfectly, no need to shorten! the key is the flange however.

                            here's a trick.

if you have an m20 G260, take its output flange and transfer it to the M30 G260 to use your oem smaller guibo driveshaft.
