E30 Conversion like none I have seen

So, on the weekend I had some maintenance to do at a family property in Maldon in Central Victoria, one of those historic towns as central Victoria is known as "The Goldfields" of Australia.

In town they had "The Taste of Gold" festival on with lots of local food and wine. Stopped in for a quick coffee with my sister and I spotted an E30 4 dr with a big lightening bolt on the roof parked on the footpath (pavement) with its bonnet up. I had to check it out and this is what I saw,




Had a quick chat to the owner who was an elderly gentleman who decided to convert to electric after the M10 gave up the ghost. It still runs the Getrag 5 speed minus clutch. Claims it has more torque than the M10 lol,

Hahah I couldnt help but tell him I had 4 E30s and had stuffed a quad cam V8 in one. I think he liked me up until that point :giggle:

Oh and ps, pic was taken after I gave him a hand to take bonnet off as nobody was looking at it with bonnet (hood) hiding the engine bay. Once it was off he had a crowd and looked as proud as punch

NP, thought it was worth a crappy phone pic and post.

I guess that when you start, the motor is not rotating so you can just select 1st. Then just rev match to change gears. I overheard him saying to someone else that it sometimes takes a few seconds to get the rev match right and to go up a gear and that you can skip gears as its quite torquey.

Also you don't need a clutch because the electric motor has no load and cannot stall, therefore eliminating the use of a clutch. I have seen on some cars you don't even need to rev match because the syncros do all the work.

You didn't by any chance ask him what batteries he was running and how many did you?

I didnt because he got swamped with people and I was already neglecting my sister who had driven 2hrs to see me lol

He is a Maldon local which is about 45 mins for here and I will be down there again over the next few weeks so I will see what I can find out
