    No Start. @#*!

Finished my swap a while ago, had numerous problems but got shit done. I couldn't figure out why the starter was drawing ~300 amps. After having the starter hooked up wrong for the longest time and wondering why it was draining the battery, I finally figured it out, bought a new battery, and started driving it. ( I didn't have both power and alternator leads hooked up to the same terminal on the starter)

It was running fine until the other day when, not having started it for a couple days, I drove it to work. It cranked slow but started, and drove to work fine. When I left for lunch, it was cranking real slow and wouldn't start, so I jumped it thinking I could take it home and bring my other car back. Naturally, it stalled in a busy intersection, started twice and stalled twice, and finally was cranking extremely slow so I figured I had drained the battery. I managed to get it off to the side, had my girlfriend come jump me, and drove it home. I haven't driven it since and this was last week thursday.

Yesterday I went to move it into the driveway, and it started perfectly fine. However, when I went to start it this morning it was cranking real slow and wouldn't start. I tried to jump it with my prizm, but it wouldn't jump. I even changed the battery for the charged prizm battery, and it was still cranking slow and not starting. About this time I noticed a burning plastic smell, and saw that the metal brake line that runs to the passenger front wheel and the abs box was very very hot, and was melting the plastic clips that hold it. I figured there was a wire shorting onto the brake line, but there is nothing touching it the whole length of the engine bay.

Having pushed it out of the driveway, I used my girlfriends Mazda3 to jump it, and after a few slow cranks it cranked normal and started fine. I drove it to a parking spot, let it run for a while, then shut it off. When I went to start it again to test it was cranking very slow again and wouldn't start. I can't figure out what is going on and I'm about at wit's end with this car.

    Thanks guys.

just off the top of my head, do you have the large braided gound strap installed? Between the engine and chassis?

Turns out the ground strap had lost the bolt from the one side, but being under the alternator I hadn't noticed. Also, I changed the alternator and noticed that the alternator ground was loose as well. Afterwords it started up fine.

        I feel like a moron.

I just wonder why the brake line was smoking?

Somehow the brake line was the ground when you cranked the engine over. It would get pretty hot with all that current running through it.
