Anyone replace oil pan bolts with studs?

Since I have the engine on the stand, I was trying to understand why everything that attaches to the engine is done with studs, except the oil pan. Figured it would be a cleaner solution with the stack height of the crank scraper.

    Anyone do this?

My initial thought is that if you have tight clearance for taking the oil pan on and off studs will just get in your way. I don't really see any benefit to doing that but if it tickles your fancy then go for it.

That makes sense. I don't need to complicate my build, thats for sure.

I figure BMW thought it through enough and figured bolts would work. Studs wouldn't really make for any advantage that I can think of.

Studs would also make pan gasket surface clean-up more time consuming.

Maybe run a few studs in equal locations around the block surface to help with locating the pan?

...Stick with the original bolts IMO.

Here's a 3.0L turbo engine we built at e30motorwerks, though the studs were later removed because we couldn't wiggle it around the aftermarket baffle in the pan. We have plenty of studs left. They work great if you don't have a pan baffle. PM me if you're interested

Wouldn't they hit the subframe? Mine seems low enough that they would.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe two on either side at the front and two on either side at the back to locate.

You have to jack the engine up when removing the oil pan with the engine in the car anyway so clearance isn't an issue.
