Yes and no. There are a lot of M30 combos.

    2.5 L (2494 cc/152 in³)
    2.8 L (2788 cc/170 in³)
    3.0 L (2986 cc/182 in³)
    3.2 L (3210 cc/195 in³)
    3.4 L (3430 cc/209 in³)

It's the most readily available. M30B35 is the best M30 swap. M30B34 is good for turbos. Basically, if the engine isn't really cheap, or free, get a B35. It's a whole lot easier to wire and produces more power. I did a M30B35 swap into my e28, which came with a M30B34.

how do you tell if you have a B35? my m30 came out of an 88' e? and the intake says 3.5...

B35s have the valve cover that says "BMW" toward the front. B34s have a roundel almost under the AFM, next to the oil fill. B35s say =3.5= on the intake manifold with a roundel on top of the mani. B34s say 3.2/3.5 on the mani and =BMW= on top.

            B35:

            B34:

            That's the easy way.

To dig deeper, b34s (unless it's a euro high comp b34) will have a dished piston. The H/C Euro engine has "piano-top" H/C pistons. They look like the top of a grand piano on top. The B35 pistons are higher comp than B34, so they have a ridge built up w/valve reliefs. Combustion chamber is different, as is the cam. B35 intake valves are 1mm bigger than the B34. Oil pan is different too. B35 had the oil sump closer to the front of the engine. B34s have it a little further back. Exhaust manifolds are bigger on the B35 too. Not the oil filter housing on the B34 block vs. the B35. B34, the filter is removed in a downward direction, B35 it's taken out of the top.
B34s also ran with a hydro-boost brake system, therefore, there is no vacuum hose from the intake mani to the brake booster. Most B35's ran with a vacuum booster, and will have a hose from the back of the intake mani to the brake booster. B35 also has fewer vacuum hoses. I counted 2 on mine. The B34 (see pic above) has quite a few more. Also the B35 fuel injectors are covered in a plastic goojah. B34 injectors are out in the open.

(Throw a B35 head on a B34 block for a nasty low compression turbo motor.)

Generally, if it's out of an e28/e24, its a B34. Late (1988+) e24s got the B35, as did the e34, e32. There is no high compression, Euro B35. They are all 9:1.

My B35 has a VIN on the valve cover too. It came from a 91 e34.

That's just all off the top of my head for now.

If it's in an e28, it's a m30b34... Just get a b35 oil pan and pick up, you can use the gearbox though.

Rare to get a manual e28, grab it for sure.

                        B35s don't come in e28s.

                        Just the eta/b34s. :(

Then there's the euro L-block. And the turbo version m90.
