ok so today i went and replaced my water pump and thermostat because i was overheating and leaking coolant. so after i get the job done i am still over heating. ive properly bled the system yet when i am sitting at idle it will slowly rise all the way to the red. i flushed the radiator, i checked all the hoses, i checked my new thermostat as well (ran engine with thermo out to see if i was still overheating) and i dont have clouds of smoke pouring out from my exhaust. im really annoyed at this point. i spent 12 hours outside today and nothing. i thought it could be radiator cap letting air in so i ran with it off but it would start to slightly bubble so its getting air from somewhere i think? not from heating at this point it was still ok. but yea any help would be awesome. im renting a compression tester on my next day off so well see if that will answer my headgasket or intake gasket thoughts.

Hello.
I've never had problems myself but what I do is just fill the radiator first
then fill the system through the reservoir
run the car with the cap off until it starts to come out
Let it cool down and pour in some more coolant.
Just keep running it through cycles and pouring it in.
Usually everything bleeds out just fine that way. Hope that helps and good luck.Comment

(to clarify, the people with e30m30s have electrical fans that are on. If you dont have a mech fan and don't turn on your e-fan while the car is sitting, you'll overheat fairly quickly)Comment

My m30e30 has the electrical fan wired so that it will kick on low speed at 80c or if AC is on and high speed at 88c via the coolant temp sensor. I know it's also common for people to just wire it to a switch so you can manually turn it on/off.
Not sure when the electric fan turns on in a 535i but you make it sounds like it doesn't unless you turn it on? Not sure what you mean by that.Zinno '89 <24v swap in progress>
