    M30 timing

When putting the head back on the M30 setting the timing seems a little rough. The Bently says you are suposed to align the camshaft sprocket so that the key is in the lower left with the screws pointing directly up and down. I did that but I could not get the screws to line up exacly up and down. They are off by a few degress. If I go to the next link in the timing chain then they are under by a few degress. The difference seems to be rather large. There is about 10-12 degress between each link of the chain and where it sits on the sprocket. I got it on the closest one but is there are better way to set the timing. It just seems like this is a little imprecise for a BMW. I dont want to start it up and find out the hard way something was wrong.
Of course I am setting this will the block is top dead center and I did roll the engine over a few times and the timing remained "on". Is this just good enough I guess?
My e36 required the 1 NM of force on the timing chain to set the sprocket correctly. I guess that is the kind of thing I was looking for on this motor too.

Rotate till both #1 intake and exhaust lobes are pointing downward, rotate slightly to get 2 out of the 4 bolts that hold the cam gear, pointing verticle in reference to the engine, and then make sure the crank, with the vibration damper installed is lined up with the line on the lower timing cover and the line on the vibration damper.

Thanks for the response. Sorry I was busy working all weekend so I did not have time to check the forum earlier. I did time the car as the Bently suggests. I put the camshaft in the correct position and the block is set to TDC as specified by the mark. The question I have is when I attach the timing chain to the cam sprocket the bolts to not line up and down perfectly. There is about 10 degress of rotation between links of the chain. If I put it on one link the it is forward a few degress and if put it on the other link then it is a few degress backward. I was wondering if the sprocket bolts should be perfectly up and down or if a few degres past is alright.
