Question in regards to which base to start with.

This is more of a general Engine Q than anything specific.. I've got a rotating assembly pretty much buttoned up and ready to install...

I was just curious...When you're all going to buy a engine from someone parting out their car, or a salvage yard ie....

What do you guys look for in order to all but ensure a quality starting point?

I've gotten lucky however I am constantly reminded of the first engine I purchased many many years ago in which loked like it was in good condition, but had rust in every inch of it on the inside..leading me to just go and buy a second one to start with...

I can diagnose the big problems without a hitch dropping the pan and giving things a few spins while looking close is easy enough....But when I'm in a scenario where i can't really spin the engine, or worse yet the engine won't spin due to age/rust/damage (but salvageable) what are some techniques to pick & choose.
