    g265 shifter questions

Been driving my m30 e30 for almost a month now and I love it, problem is my shifter is ridiculously sloppy. I mean lots of movement in every gear sloppy. I have a g265 behind a b35 with good n tight's mounts in pos 2. I'm using a e28 sheet metal shifter that's had the carrier and selector rod shortened about 3/4" so it sits center in the hole. I was also given a z3 shifter which I would like to either make fit into the sheet metal carrier, or convert to the late model carrier which I will shorten as well.

I ran into a couple of problems and haven't been able to find answers anywhere:

    1. where is all of the slop coming from? is the rubber piece on the back of the shifter worn or is the knuckle on the trans itself needing replacement?

    2. Is anybody else using the same shifter setup as me, and if so would the z3 shifter in the e28 carrier make contact with the guibo?

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul

I had the same set up, but i was using a OEM selector rod of either 2002 or e21 320i.
It cost much less, yet accomplished the same result compare to using a Z3 shifter.

Check the rubber bushing grommet of the plate carrier towards the back of it.

By any chance, do you have a balancer that wraps around the guibo?

I kinda figured that had something to do with it. I saw a mod on an e24 forum where the rubber spacer was replaced with a solid piece so I'll give that a try. I don't have a balancer, I'm using a shortened e28 driveshaft.

I had the same shifter set up.

Worn bushes in the selector rod (both ends) will cause your problem (lateral and horizontal slop)

How is your sheet metal carrier mounted to the gearbox? Is it solid bolted?

Also, are you able to pull you gear stick up and down? This would indicate worn cup or worn rear mount.

I had to solid bolt the carrier to the gearbox after the bushings ripped out. I assembled something resembling a sleeve using a bolt that fit into the little attachment pieces and a washer. Seems to be working pretty good, but they do loosen up on me every couple of weeks.

There isn't really any up and down movement, just side to side and fron to back. I dropped in a z3 shifter and tightened up the carrier bolts and it's a night and day difference. Much shorter throws and an all around solid feel when shifting. I picked up a late model style carrier which I will have shortened later or once I've had enough of the one I have now.

Yeah I had the same deal, I ended up using quality spring washers and a dab of "locktite" on the bolts to prevent from coming loose.

Do the same for the rear mount.

Z3 is something I should have done... Enjoy!

Could always go the route I did. Gets rid of the carrier issues altogether.

              Bimmerworld race shifter
              Akg selector rod
              Jaffster knob (just because)

Most of the play in mine was due to the selector joint being worn out and the rod fitting loosely.

I ordered a new joint, rubber buffer, pin, and several of the nylon washers.

I put as many washers as i could fit on the selector rod ends, and coupled with the new joint I had an amazing shifter.

It surprisingly degraded fast though, but that might be due to other problems I had.

I am now making a DSSR and going to drill out the plastic of another new selector joint and I am going to press in bearing bronze and ream it for a tight fit. Then I should have an amazing shift feel that lasts.

got the z3 shifter installed last night, hardest part was getting the heat shield off with my exhaust in the way...biggest pita ever. the throw is much better, and just notchy enough for me.

Probably should have put locktite on the bolts as well, but i'l do that soon with the rear bushing. Also, I read on the e28 forums that you can use one of the rubber bushings from the airbox? I'll give that a try and report back. Can't hurt to try it.

I used a urethane transmission mount and drilled a hole in the top of my trans tunnel and bolted it. The urethane between the carrier and the trans tunnel gives it just enough squish, but it feels solid. I also have urethane engine and trans mounts, so the drivetrain doesnt move much at all.

                      This.

I machined brass bushings for mine in the end, thing was tight and notchy!

Does anybody else's gearbox sit ridiculously close or touch the drivers side of the tunnel? Mine does and makes me wonder if I should have hammered it out
