Refreshing m30 this all I need?

Just making a list before I order.
    Any input is appreciated.

    Block:

Rear crank seal with Cover gasket
Front crank seal and Timing cover gaskets
    Timing chain guide rail
    Tensioner guide rail
    Oil pan gasket
Main and Rod bearing std size
    Rod bolts/nuts
    Water pump & Gasket

Thinking of getting rings and doing a DIY hone?

    Sound right to you guys?
Right now it's at $400 from bma. Before r3v code though. ;D

You'll want to kick yourself in the dick halfway through when you are missing gaskets, just buy a complete top and bottom end gasket set. You'll thank me.

Do what Brandon said as well as buy new timing chains and sprockets. The double row sprocket on the crank, the cam sprocket and the oil pump sprocket. All that timing related stuff needs to be addressed, not JUST gaskets.

What's the word on VR headgaskets for m30s? I know people have had a host of problems with them on the m20.

            Very nice. Thanks!
I missed the oil canister gasket.

What type of problems do m20s have?
I've always used elring since that's what bma carries.
but I'm going to use a s38 gasket. It has better coolant flow.

I wonder if bluntech can give me a s38 gasket instead?

I just did some research on this subject the other day.. Pretty much everyone said if you've got less than ~250k miles in your engine, don't bother changing the timing chain (even guide rails) or oil pump chain, it's more work than its worth. Change the tensioner and piston, replace the crush washer prime it then call it good.

Have you made a purchase from www.blunttech.com recently?

Check that your oil spray bar bolts are the updated ones :-)
Timing chain is meant to last the life of the motor, and no one has reported failures, if you're picky, guide rails arent bad.

I should have taken pics while I was in there, but sometimes if that guide rail is worn, or broken in rare cases, the chain will just barely skim the lower timing chain cover, enough to make a slight sound at idle.

The crank nut I've yet to endure, but I've heard it's a joy!

Just building on this thread. I presume that the rod bolts and studs are reusable, right?

That's what I have so far. Obviously I would have to spec everything out when it is torn down and see if the clearances are still good.

Rod studs are not reusable because they're are torque to yield.

The m20 VR headgaskets seem to have a higher rate of premature failure.

                        See this thread.

Interesting read. I saw on my m30 it has a VR head gasket. I am wondering if my compression failures are due to HG issues rather than rings...

Edit: I am now even more curious as to the condition of my head gasket since doing a little research. Car had a VR head gasket (been replaced before, obviously), bad radiator (giant hole in it) and was owned by a dumb chick and her dumber boyfriend for a few months before they parked it.
