    Problems getting started...

Hey guys so I have my b34 in, 1.3 motronic all hooked up, new fuel pump, plugs, wires... car cranks, and started on starter fluid when my fuel pump was dead. It stumbles for about a half a second while cranking then won't fire anymore. I cleaned the plugs because they were covered in fuel, and the same thing happens. I go to crank it and almost immediately it tries to start (stumbles for a half a second) then nothing. Im pretty much at a loss right now as to what I should do. Thinking about checking compression, what do you think?

Clean icv, check for vacuum leaks, and test cps if you have a multimeter.

Too much fuel could be leaky cold start injector. Try disconnecting it.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I'll try cleaning the icv some more, should it be squeaky clean in there? cps reads above 550 ohms (I don't have a digital miltimeter, just a dial type). I deleted the cold start injector for the motronic swap. I definitely covered the spark plugs with some more fuel so I'm waiting for those to dry out a bit before I do anything.

Ok, so I just bought some starting fluid and with the fuel pump relay pulled it started right up and died about 15 seconds later. So I hunkered the fuel pump relay and let it sit running for about a minute, shot some starting fluid past the afm and tried to turn it on... Nothing just crank crank crank. I'm fully lost right now idk where to look.

Hmmm, well seems like you atleast have spark if it ran for 15 seconds.
At this point I would personally start at where the fuel lines enter the engine, pull them and put the inlet side into a water bottle while someone else turns the key over for a second, if fuel does NOT comes out your problem is before the engine, whether it be a pump or an electrical issue.

            Start there brotha.

It has spark and it has fuel. I know it does I just put in a walbro 255lph pump and I verified the lines are hooked up the right way. At this point I'm going to borrow a friend's compression tester and see what I get.

Did you change the fpr? Motronic 1.3 takes a 3 bar where as a b34 uses a 2.5 bar fpr.

Compressions tests are nice. But to say the least it's a "peace of mind" thing to see fuel PHYSICALLY come out the line, I've bought many parts brand new that we're "DOA". Isn't there a fuel sending unit inside the gas tank too? When you lift of the rear seat.. That could be dead. If you didn't verify gas physically coming out the lines... You haven't really verified anything other than the fact you have a new walbro pump with a receipt.

Best part, it's free and takes 2 minutes of your time... Can't hurt when you're saying " I'm fully lost right now idk where to look."

I helped a buddy who had a no start problem that turned to be his ECU, I have a known working one I can ship if you don't have an extra 179 for testing. Just let me know :)

Ill definitely try and change the fpr. And I will visually verify that fuel is coming thru the lines again even though I saw it before and I can hear it running thru the rail pound and clear. Thanks guys

Hey that all I wanted to hear! :), if you verified fuel physically getting into the fuel rail and your injectors are wet BOOM. Question answered. I just didn't see it mentioned so I threw it out there :)

I try anything free before buying parts, next, swap out the ecu for shits and giggles if you have a buddy down there with ANY m30b35 borrow their 179 for 3 minutes.

I'm a complete asstard and I forgot rule number 1 of the Internet- just because something works for five, ten people online: doesn't mean it's gonna work for you...

The valves were adjusted way too tight, by me, because I had read that I can adjust them to some number on the cam side of the rocker arm. I adjusted them per recommendation from my only bimmer buddy in town. After I threw it all back together it was sounding like it wanted to start so I held the starter on for a good 15 second and she came alive!

Thanks for the answers to my original query guys! I went for a quick little jaunt around the neighborhood and it cuts out under load pretty much. First gear I can give it good throttle if I apply it slowly. Second gear at 1300 rpm it barely runs kinda thing. I'm gonna try doing some parts throwing because I have spares or most of the sensors... So yeah, I'll have a video up soon to show you guys.
