M30 Has spark and fuel, but wont start

Okay so here is my situation. My dad had a 1989 535i, fairly low miles but the body was rough and it was an auto. We found a 91 535i with a 5 speed and no engine for $700.
So we have been in the process of swaping the m30 out of the 89 in to the 91. Now its in and hooked up except for the exhaust. But it wont fire up, it just cranks over. I pulled a spark plug and checked for spark, and it had a spark, and i have fuel pressure at the line where it hooks up to the engine, and it has fuel coming to it. Any ideas what it can be? i checked the cps and it was with in spec.
Can i check the injectors? they worked before we pulled it. let me know what i can look for.
I posted this in the 5 series forum as well, but there doesn't seem to be much traffic over there.

Is the fuel hooked up to the correct side of the fuel rail?

Going to the basics, Air, Fuel, Spark are all that is needed. Spark is the only one really dependant on timing.

Is there any attempt at starting? sounds that signify things are going correctly?

I believe so. I have tired both ports just in case I was wrong. Bit nothing changed. Nothing should have changed on timing, it ran before. When it turns over it makes no sign of starting. Just continuous cranking. No sputtering or any cylinders firing.

Are the injectors firing? Are the plugs dry after turning the motor over, or are they wet?

They were dry. I changed the fuel filter and it fired up. I guess the old one was really restricting the fuel. Thanks for all the help guys. It's running now!
