Weird noise... fuel pump?

i have a 91 318i, and im not sure what this noise in my car is.

its coming from the rear of the car by the fuel tank, its a constant buzzing. one of my buddies said its my fuel pump.
if there was something wrong with it, would it be making a noise like that?
what else could it be?
