E30B35 swap done! Running a bit hot

Hey guys, after 3 days my m30 swap is done, man how cool is that. Used an E24 gearbox 4 speed getrag 262 with an m30b35 from an unknown donor car. Here's a few pics.

    A few visitors^

Spent 4 hours getting it on the mounts

    Second time this shit happened

    Dat clearance

Wiring takes us into day 3

    Starts up first time

    Final pic

What a cool experience. Anyways guys yeah the cooling system was bled but it started overheating quite a bit, even went into the red. I know having no fan really hurts cooling but I think the heat was due to air in the system? Any ideas?

M30's are a bitch the bleed. What rad are you running? You really do need a 16 inch spal fan. I've never seen a m30 swap done with the early model tank.

Dont know which radiator cause its from a local shop. Pretty big and flat though, maybe only an inch wide at the mid section, and yeah getting a 16 inch fan today, thinking of putting it in front of the radiator due to the fact thats the only way i can attach it, or is that counter productive as it may block a bit of air going into the radiator when moving?

In front is fine. Do your self a favor and put a mishimoto in you'll thank me later. That or a e28 535 rad

that looks like an e28 radiator, all but old and dirty as hell. I'd get a good fan, not a $30 fan that you hastily bought either, a good one. Like a spal or whatever else is actually good. Could use that radiator just clean the fins out and make sure the radiator isint plugged up at all. I got a new e28 535i radiator a while ago along with my 16" spal and it cools perfectl, 95+ degree temps.

lift your coolant res. tank like a a foot above the motor and while holding it up open the bleed screw(car doesn't need to be running). start filling as you hold the tank up in the air , it will push the air out of the system. worked for me on my M30.

if that fails make sure your thermostat inst in backwards( what I did on accident)

if you're going into the red really quickly after warm up i'd suspect thermo is in backwards. I did the same as kamotors and installed it backwards the first time.

For bleeding, which i've done a few times on my m30, I followed a trick from the e28 boards... works perfectly every time and can be done totally cold.

              1. remove the overlow hose at the overflow tank. (that's the little one from the radiator to the overflow.
              2. connect another hose the same size to the overflow tank to the same place you just made the disconnection.
              3. Hold the overflow hose up in the air, it should be coming from the radiator to your hand in the air.
              4. Blow into the hose connected to the overflow until no more bubbles come out of the hose in the air.
You shouldn't even need to use the bleeder valve. You can to test it but I'm more than positive my above mentioned technique will push out 95% of the bubbles.

You really need to get that fan in. Cheap or not, doesn't matter IMO, just get one on there. The m30 won't survive more than 10 mins in traffic without a fan.

Yeah we held the tank up and used the bleeder valve and what not the first time, second time we put the car on an incline and got some more out but i could hardly make it 5 mins up the road without it going into the red. I dont think it was backwards because it was steaming when i pulled over :/

Did you do any work on that motor? Do you know the condition? could be a head gasket if its over heating that quick. Check your thermostat and get a good spal fan first. I

even with the thermostat in backwards it will release coolant and steam i went like 2 wees thinking that m30s just run really hot.

remove the 19mm plug thats on the other side if the thermostat all while holding up the res. tank, sometimes air gets stuck back there.

Replaced thermostat and tried bleeding kamotors way, temp held a little under halfway for 20 mins, still warms up more when I stop of course but the fan I got should be going in soon

Once you get it sorted you should have zero overheating issues.

My car runs a new behr e28 535i radiator with a 16 inch pusher fan from an e32 and a 71 degree thermostat. On the cruise the gauge sits on around a 3rd, and at half in traffic, even on 110F days.

Hopefully mine runs that cold. I live in a place where it only gets up to like 80 degrees f haha. And on top of that it's winter here. Luckily. Yeah hopefully the fan is effective, gonna have to do some wiring to a switch in the cabin for it to work I think

Just noticed you're in New Zealand - with only 27 degrees in summer are you on the South Island? (I'm in Australia so we can talk celsius! :) )

a little off topic, but you managed to keep you battery up front and not relocate to trunk with no clearance issues?????
