Garagistic mounts and ireland engineering m30 headers

    Here's my unbiased review.

For those looking to shell out the $ on a nice set of Ireland Engineering headers to compliment your M30 swap used with Garagistic swap mounts.

I got a great deal on both my mounts, and headers. Had I of paid full pop I'd be pretty upset...check it out.

Straight forward, the mounts are great.
Nice welds, and mated my M30b35 to my e30 vert with relative ease.

Not so much the same when it comes to fitment issues, as Garagistic claims they'll fit e34 m30 headers.
    Incorrect.

It's at the expense of some hammering that the headers will clear the mounts.
Not only that, be prepared to really have to hammer in the tranny tunnel.

I'm getting there fitment wise, but I certainly wasn't prepared to have to hit my precious e30 with a sledge....again.

    Mount hits header

Tranny tunnel...header needs another 2-3 inches before it clears

So are the header fitment issues in the tunnel related more to the headers themselves and how they are shaped? Or is it related to the motor mount arms and how they position the motor?

I think it boils down to the garagistic claim that ie headers will fit m30 swapped e30's.
The mounts essentially determine the position of the engine...

As you can see in the picture, the there is contact at the mount...
Furthermore, not sure if there's a diff in tranny tunnel per chasis but as per the pic it simply doesn't clear.

I'm 6'2 250lbs...technically I can fit into a size extra small t shirt... but I wouldn't go around bragging about it because it doesn't fit me properly, and it sure took me alot of effort to get into it.

if the engine sits straight in the bay (which it apparently does, otherwise i'd think you'd be complaining about it) it's probably the fault of the headers. most of the IE stuff i've bought is pretty subpar as far as quality goes, wouldn't be surprised if there was a goofup during the production of your header

like most of us, I work hard for my $.
I feel a little taken considering I purchased under the false pretence that these headers would fit.
Whether it's IE or Garagistic, there's nothing that really can be done and i'm potentially out $500.

It's funny how drastic the change of tune is about ie when you go from 2002faq to r3vlimited. I've never had complaints from them and only the best results

Nope, the M30 headers are something IE is pretty dang proud of. They're pretty underpriced considering what's going into them. Bear in mind no header is "made to fit" a custom swap into a different chassis, it just isn't logical given variations and potential differences.

Since the mounts were made by someone who claimed to have made considerations for these headers it would be interesting to look into it. I actually have picked up a set of the mounts under the same pretenses. We'll see how it pans out after the car is back from paint.

Michael, I have some theories based on a person's comfort level with a wrench and pervasive perceptions amungst internet-users.

Mr. Burns, if there is something I can do by all means let me know via PM. It would be interesting to at least compare notes.

on a mechanical level, I'm fairly well versed. I'm confident as a "backyard mechanic", but by all means I am not a certified tech. To me, headers are typically a "bolt on" affair, and really shouldn't take much mechanical skill/knowledge to attach them to a block/exhaust.
My weakness is electronics/wiring. Everything else, i'm cool and the gang.

I'm at a point now, where I'm wondering whether I should just give up on them and slap on my oem manifolds just so that I can finally drive the car.
Part of me wants to do that, the other part doesnt' want to have to keep hammering away at the underside of my car in order to fit poor fitting headers.

                this--> is incorrect.

this is also incorrect--> (from Garagistic website)
Power your e30 with the legendary m30 b35 engine!

These motor mounts allow you to put the legendary m30 b35 engine into the great platform of the e30.<--this is true and does a great job That means the legendary m30 3.5 liter inline 6 can bolt into your e30! The m30 is a tried and true setup in an e30. Tons of torque, beautiful noise, and not to mention the large aftermarket for adding a turbo to the m30! Unlike all the other mounts on the market, this is the only e30 m30 mount to be able to clear aftermarket headers (such as the IE unit).

I've ordered plenty from IE, and they're headers are actually a very nice piece...I'm/I was really looking forward to using them

they'd be greatly discounted, as I've already had to hammer the a lower portion of the header in about 1/4"....i'm talking more than 1/2 of what I paid.

Made a executive decision this morning.

They're just not going to fit.

Will trade slight altered m30b35 headers for oem m30b35 manifolds.

so- my car is basically ready to roll.

                          except I have no exhaust.

I'm going to bite the bullet and have my car towed to Stebro (yes Stebro) and see if they can work some magic with these IE headers....

I imagine they can likely cut the one closest to the firewall, and make a bend, and likely mate this to my exhaust (or if the price is right, one of their exhausts...)

from the get go, I told myself that if I'm going to do something, I"m going to only want to do it once, and do it right.

I can't think of a better company that can try and salvage these IE headers other than Stebro.

                          so I'll wait and see.

to those that have PM'd me looking to trade up some OEM manifolds, i'm going to try this 1st.
if it doesn't work, I"ll be in touch

This is why I ended up with Good&Tight mounts and Bavauto headers. I first tried Stahl and Schmiedmann headers but they needed more modification than I wanted.

Very interesting how much difference there us between your fit and my fit in regards to mounts clearing the headers. I mentioned to you in pm that I only had to put a small dimple in the one pipe that runs up against the actual mount. And yes the clearance at the firewall is the same problem I had but since these headers were meant for the e34 chassis it was expected.

Hope you get it all cleared up Mr burns.
