Alright, I've gotten to thinking, and I'm wanting some opinions on this. This is for my '89 M30B35 that is in my '84 318i. I am considering going to MegasquirtNSpark, a moderate cam (292/292? suggestions there also?), and an intake manifold that I will make myself to save tons of money. What are you all's thoughts and opinions on this?

Ah, come on guys! 21 people and no thoughts or opinions that you can express? I know you guys are more opinionated than this. You slackers! -
A 292 isn't a modorate cam, you might lose some torque ?
You will also benifit from using a ported head with that(any) cam to get the best out of it.
What sort of power delivery are you hoping to acheive ?
What sort of thing have you in mind for the inlet manifold ?
After i've got the Alpina B10 bottom end in (with my ported head/Schrick 284/280 cam) and running i want to fit this twin 60mm TB.

Well, would you happen to know about how much torque lost compared to horsepower gained this would be with a cam like that with the appropriate port and polish, maybe a three angle valve grind? As for the manifold ideas. I was kind of thinking of making something somewhat similar to the M50 manifolds, but I'm not positive. I even thought of doing what you're doing. Just swapping the throttle body to the other side of the manifold, but then again I'm trying to cut weight down off the motor, and save some room in the engine bay. Would 270-280 crank horsepower be achievable with the head work, cam, manifold, and proper MS tuning? What type of injectors should I use? High or low impedance? lbs/hr or CC? What would the torque numbers look like with these mods?Comment

I couldn't give any definate numbers because theres so many variables like how well the heads have been ported and how the MS has been tuned ETC, so any numbers i use will estimated.
I will start off by desribing the power delivery i have with my cam and then give my opinion on how i think the 292 cam will be.
Up to 1.5k i have lost a little torque compaired to standard, 1.5k through to 3.5k no loss of torque, 3.5k to 4k the engine starts to come on cam, 4k to 6k it's really pulling well, 6k onwards the power starts to drop off so i've set my rev limiter to 6.3k because theres no point reving any higher if the powers not there.
With the 292 i'm guessing you are going to have less torque up to 3.5-4k, it will come on cam at about 4k onwards through to about 6.2-6.4 where peak power will be made.
You might have a lumpy tick over or have to have a slightly higher tick over to smooth it out, i'm not sure on the emision(sp?) laws where you are but it's worth investigating as you will have increased bad emisions.
I'd guess with that set up you could get any where in between 250-270bhp(crank) @ 6.2-6.4k and 240lbs(ish) of torque @ 4.2-4.4k
To get any higher you would have to look in to increasing your C/R and a well designed 6 branch exhaust manifold and matching exhaust with around 2-2 1/4 inch internal bore tubing, twin tube of course.
This X pipe is some thing thats supposed to help increase torque and power, it's some thing i want to have on mine, the E30 M3 and E34 M5 both have an X pipe so it's got be worth while.
(may be not exactly like this)
M30 injectors are good for around 260-270bhp so might want upgrading. To cope with my estimated power after i've got the high compression Alpina bottom end and the twin tb fitted i've got some 30lb injectors to give me some reserve capacity. Most injectors are high impediance.
I got mine from here but you could also try ebay

My own motor makes about 240-250 depending on the RR, this is an old one when my engine was still in my old E34 but it's with the cam and head work fitted.

Thanks that gives me some things to think about. Our emissions here are getting stricter and stricter. I would like for the cam to give it a little bit of a loping idle. I love the way that sounds, but I really hate to lose any torque. I guess probably what I'll do is go ahead with the MS conversion and then start experimenting with the intake manifold. Then I'll probably decide then if I'd like to stay n/a or go f/i. Thanks for your help guys.Comment

Well, I just ordered a MSII v3.0 kit from glen. What kind of ignition system would you guys recommend? As in what type of a coil pack, and wires? Will my stock crank wheel work?Comment
