Reference sensor on tranny bell housing

Could a bad reference sensor be the cause of an erratic idle / hard to start the car?

Possible. Usually when a crank position sensor starts to go bad the car will start and run for a little bit then just shut off. Then it wont start for a while until it cools down a little, then it will start up just fine.
