More help with M30 wiring needed!!!!!

Well, the m30 is all in, and I have everything hooked up. I am using the harness that came with the motor, out of an 88 735i. I plugged the m30 plug into the e30 plug, since I have an 87 325iS. Connected ground strap, power wire to starter, etc. Right now I go to start, and I get three clicks from around the fuse box, and the ICV valve will hum. No cranking, no fuel pump running, no power to starter.

Anyone have any idea what it could be? I know different people have talked about needing to change a few pins on the fuse bo connection.. The battery and all fuses are also brand new, so that can ruled out. I know the harness is getting power, or the ICV wouldn't be humming, so now I am trying to figure out what I get a no start, etc.

I also didn't find that "stragler" wire that was spoke of on Jared Squires' pages. There is no O2 sensor connected, and the two connectors at the ecu plug are also not plugged in since I don't know where they go. I have looked at my Haynes manual at the schematics, but they seem to be fairly useless right now. Any advice is greatly appreciated, ANY .

    Thanks, Steve

BUMP, someones gotta know something about this. My next step is going to be splicing the fuse box to engine plug individually, and that is going to be a major PITA.

go to http://www.e30zone.net/index.php and post this up there and i am sure you will get plenty of help. Alot of guys there have done this swap and I have found them to be very helpful in my research for starting this same swap.

you need to rewire the c101 round plug, allthough the problem is most likely do to the c104 plug under the dash ont he right side, it needs to be spliced into the 88 735i harness.

try the c104 plug, mine wouldn't do a damn thing till i had it all hooked up right.

Well, the ecu and harness are all from the same car, so I really think it would be the round connector that I need to re-wire. It sucks because the wiring is the one part of the swap that NOONE agrees on. I have seen it talked about 10 different ways, and each person insists that their way is the only way. I think I need to work on the round connector, but also the auto tranny neutral switch could also be to blame, since the harness is from an auto car.

its because each and every swap is somehow a little different when it comes to wiring. i had to end up using an 87 "I" harness with the 91 e34 m30 ecu and motor, the m20 temp sensor, its very weird each time and takes a lot of research and with me trial and error

ya the wiring is different for every single, motor and chassis combo.

Ok i'm confused. I see people saying that they are using the m20 harness with the m30 motor. And others are using the m30 harness with the m30 motor. Now i got a 87es. But i got a 87i m20 harness. The motor is in a 85 535i. The m30 harness got butchered for some reason. So do i use a m20 or m30 harness for this swap? I'm not to for sure if i want to do this swap or not yet. I'm just confused on the wiring harness part.

You can use either wiring harness. Some say that the m30 harness is easier to use because it comes with the engine, but others insist that you can and should use the stock harness for ease of swap...all you have to do is extend some wiring on the harness to reach certain sensors.

I'll definitely be using the E30 harness this time around. No splicing at the fusebox sounds so... convenient.

I would be tempted to do this as well...

did you get it figured out?
