    E30 M30 swap owners...which gen m30 did you use?

I'm getting ready to start on my motor swap from a m20 to a m30 I'm using the 2nd gen m30 from a e23 86 735i w the motronic system. I know I have to use the e34 oil pan and the gen 3 m30 is most ideal but the e23 was free so thats what im going with. I plan on doing custom exhaust *straight pipes to a magnaflow 2.5in dual in/single outlet*, and adding a Conforti chip. I have a couple questions.

1st. What Generation motor M30 did you use?
    Gen I w the L-jet injection i.e e12, e9
    Gen II w motoronic injection ..i.e e23/e28
    GenII w advanced motronic inj..i.e e32/e34

2nd. Did you leave the motor stock? Add boost, chip??

3rd. What kind of power can i expect? I know stock is 182hp but thats with a cat converter and i won't have one of those. In Euro trim i think hp was 208 or 218hp

I used a late generation e32 m30, out of a 1990 735iL. So far, stock, but no cat. At some point it will see a chip, etc

Hope that wasn't too much info.

Expect around 190hp without a cat in the second gen M30. It still should be a good boost considering that the TQ is insane. You can always upgrade to a M30B35 gen III head later on down the road.

Not to mention, your engine is a perfect candidate for turbo-charging with it's low stock compression of like 8.5:1. Good luck!

Early Euro "L" Block, 9.3:1, 264 cam, 93.355mm pistons, 3453cc instead of the B34's 3430cc. Makes 218hp and ~232ft/lbs stock... It revs a little better than the later ones because of the shorter stroke, bigger bore, and hotter stock cam.

Not to mention, your engine is a perfect candidate for turbo-charging with it's low stock compression of like 8.5:1. Good luck!
The US B34 actually had 8:1 compression! Weak!!

I saw your post at mye28
turbo kit is from TCD stage 2+ I have extras it took that spical clutch disk to hold the power but todds clutch holds fine I beleve I had already bought my disk when he came out with his.

What fuel pump are you running?

I was running 42# injectors after market fuel pump with stock pressure 35 psi I was running 12:0:1 A/F that was bouncing off 6900-7000 RPM's
I might have been close to 14:7 A/F at 15psi

I have the stock fuel pump right now. Todd never mentioned anything about getting an upgraded fuel pump. Can my stock fuel pump handle 65psi of fuel pressure? That is what I was told to set it at at 9psi boost with 30# injectors

I haven't tuned it yet, I will do that soon. As far as the clutch goes. Do you think I'm going to have clutch problems? I really don't wanna take my tranny out because it's a Biotch to get to and damn near impossible to remove/install. Do you think I'll have problems if:

I stick with my stock E28 sachs clutch? Maybe, just maybe the only problems i'll have is with the tires, NOT at the clutch..

are you running an aftermarket flywheel or stock? can you shave a flywheel down for the m30? I running a stock flywheel that i had shaved down to 14lbs *wanted a safe range so only took off 5lbs* and i love it.. she revs so much faster now and I can even run the A/C on and not feel like its sapping all the power....I have a z3 shifter in right now I can still use that for my swap right?

                          I have a JBR lightened flywheel it's 8.5#

I love it. simple as that

The z3 shifter is fine for the swap, just watch your rubbing your shift rod on your driveshaft. If you have to bend the shift rod, then go for it.

You have A/C in that car with the M30 in it? daaam, you must have a really frontheavy car

i still have my m20 in right now, but even when i do add my m30 Im keeping A/C because this will still be my DD...I'm going to use engine position #3 so the Lbs balance of my car should still be close to 50/50 or 49/51 atleast..I was having power steering woes and got pissed off and cut the belt off so I may just continue to run without it..the front end is pretty light and I do like how much more road feel you get without power steering

I think that your 88 325is with the M20 alone is like 53/47 stock. When you add an extra 100lbs in the front, it's going to be even more favorable toward the front. If you put A/C in there with a heavy front mount compressor and evaporator, you're talking about like 60/40. But like you said, if it's your daily driver, then you aren't really going to push it enough to notice much (except on and off ramps on the highway).
