Ideas for me??? for a new engine.

Okay requirements, no diesel, nothing that is not bmw, and something more powerful than the m42 also within a reasonable price range.

My m42 has numerious issues, the latest being the seal on the bottom of the block is shot, so when she is parked lots of oil leaks out, yum. So I figured what the hell why not just swap her out for something with a little more power and flexability, I was planning on doing one sometime, just couldn't justify it yet, well the justification is upon us.

My 1st thought was to just do a straight m50 swap (it is what i am leaning most toward.) I really don't know much about the m30, and the s50 is way out of my league in price.

So what do you think I should do? Also in regards to the m42 motor currently in the car it will be kept, rebuilt, and slowly built into a turbo motor.

My suggestion: I don't care what you do to get it running but you better be damn sure it makes it too e30fest.

Dude, just put the m50 in. Or fix the m42. anything to get you to e30fest haha

Another M42... and the cash u saved from doing that instead of M50, can go into your turbo motor ? ... I dunno, just a thought.

M30 dude, they are cheap as hell. I found a 162,000 mile M30 that comes with an E28 shell for $200!

turbo m42 would be alot more fun. but then again a cammed m50 isnt too shabby either.

well turbo m42 will be in the future because i will use the engine i have now and slowly shop around for parts and maybe get a lighter shell for it.

there is a nice 635csi (full car, missing intake) sitting at the yard no clue how much they want. also a m50 with 80k (dont know if its cranks or not) they want $500

any of you ohio guys got anything sitting around?
damn you davecn for stealing that m50 package off e30tech.

How bad is the 6er's body? Would you be willing to ship me some stuff if I paid for everything?

How much power are you planing to make and how much mechanical ability do you have? If you cant fix a cars oil leak I would assume the fabrication required for a M30 is out of your leauge. M50 is practically a bolt in and go which sounds right up your alley.

Im kind of curious how much an M50 swap would cost and how hard it? I'm no master tech but I like to get my hands dirty and am fairly knowledgeable. Any driveline modifications needed?

Theres a huge FAQ on M50 swaps, but if I remember correctly no driveline mods are necessary.

well i could fix the leak, but i also need a timming case rebuild and would do that too. i'm positive i am going to to the m50 route, but still keep my m42 for a future project motor.

as far as the m50 (it has probally been asked before) but i know the gertag 240 wont bolt up w/o modification. so should i get the 260? also what tranny comes in the e36 325's (i know the 318's use the 240.) also what differential would i use in the case of a m50 swap? s3.73?

This is covered in the m50 faq, but you can use a 260 tranny with a different lower mount or use an e36 tranny. I just bought a 3.73 that a guy was using on his m50e30 and he is using an e36 3.25 now because with the 3.73 he didn't like the high rpms on the freeways (70mph @4k iirc).

If you use the 260, use a 4.10 or 3.73. If you use the e36 trans, use a 3.25.
