Plan to spend $1000 on an excellent condition M42, and call it done.

The conversion will cost you well over the $100 you save...Before you tell me how much this is not worth it, it will cost me $100 less to get an rebuilt M20 w/ 5spd and ECU than it will cost to get just an unbuilt M42 longblock. Also, my M42 is toast.
That being said, what all am I going to need to make this work in my car?
Things to put into consideration:
shift linkage
driveshaft
exhaust
exhaust
exhaust (for emphasis)
Radiator
Hoses
Cluster (or coding plug)
The pain of making your own adapter. If you have to pay someone to do it, plan to spend $400.
The M42 is a GREAT little motor. Stick with it.Leave a comment:

M30 or bust
Haha, I can't help you, I don't know anything about the M42 or the M20... The only M20 I have owned was replaced by an M30 about two weeks after I brought the car home.
I will say this though, if you are trying to save a few hundred bucks, I don't know if the swap is worth the trouble. You will definitely need the entire wiring harness, and different transmission (I'm 99% sure on that), driveshaft, maybe a radiator... there are tons of hidden expenses in most engine conversions that you have to consider before you decide that it's going to save you money.Leave a comment:

what they said on bf.c was irrelevant considering my circumstances. I can't afford a bigger motor, and the M42's i find are more expensiveLeave a comment:
