whats the story behind an adjustable cam gear?

does it not just advance and set back the timing...and does it make a big difference as a performance mod???

or is it pointless unless you get a higher lift cam ie 272/272 or 288/288?

BMW did such fine job on cam timing that it is just about pointless to try to adjust it...as long as things are basically stock.

If you decide to deck your block, or shave your head enough to significantly increase compression ratio, you will automatically retard timing, due to the fact that you will have reduced the distance from the center of the cam to the center of the crank...this is where being able to adjust cam timing will make a big difference in performance.
