    740i swap

how hard is it exactly and what else would i need to complete this swap. i found a running one at the local junkyard. if i were to get this engine i would change everything on it(gaskets and such). just curious. and i also saw m30's with some that say 3.5 on the manifold and some that say 3.2/3.5. both were 535i's. wondering what the difference was there

M60B40 is not a easy swap. Its a big engine, but it can and will fit. There will be a lot of custom fabrication.

akgmotorsports.com they did the conve a few years ago and the car sold for like 15,000. it was a very nice e30 well worth the money. like jordan says alot of fab is require. the brake booster for example is towards the front of the e30 just like the e39 540i. a v8 would sound and look good in an e30 but you could get more power out of a turbo m30.

The M30s that say =3.5= on the manifold are B35s, the ones that say 3.2/3.5 are either B32s or B34s.

          I don't know, but I bet the 3.2/3.5 M30's where B34's and the 3.5 labelled ones where B35's.

I'd pass. Great motor, but unbelievable amount of work for what you'd get.

so im guessing that the 3.2/3.5 labeled manifold in a 535 is a m30b34. i figured there'd be a lot of fab work to fit a v8 into the ole whipski. thanks for the knowledge. now, depending on where you go and the condition of the engine, how much would a m30b35 go for?b34?b32?

all about the same price. over $500 is too much regardless.

You can't compare the two imo, even if they both make 240hp.

The S50 will make 240hp at high rpm whereas the M30 will make it at like 5800rpm... The S50 has to be revved out to utilize most of the torque, and even at that it's not a huge amount of torque. A cammed and chipped B35 will probably make over 260ft/lbs, and 90% of that is available from around 1800rpm to well over 5000rpm, so in terms of real world speed on public roads, I am willing to be a chipped and cammed 335i would kill an S50 powered E30... Assuming the tires could handle all of the torque!

m50/s50= smooth motor with a lack of 1980's character. Kinda bland.

M30 = throws your butt into your seat even in 4th - It's a lot more "buzzy", with that said, it's was refereed to as a "silky-smooth-six" back in the day. About the same as a m20 - just not above 5k.

Q: "What is more fun to drive on the street?"
                        A: M30

Q: What has more bragging rights?
                        A: Neither, a turbo m20/McHenery s50...

                        Q: What cost more
A: Toss up(depends on how much time you put into searching for parts. For the average guy, a m50 will cost less).

Q: What motor will last longer?
                        A: M30 by far (300k motor easy)

Q: What looks better in the engine bay?
                        A: M50 by a slight edge(love the intake runners/valve cover)

                        Q: What's easier?
A: M50 (by 2 to 3 times as much work)

Q: What will increase my resale value?
A: M50 by FAR...m30 car's are a bastard child. Expect to loose money.

Q: Why do m30's get such a bad wrap?
A: The guy who use to run this forum use to call them "gay" - and it stuck...no other reason. (kidding jordan)

Q: I have a set of metric tools I got for Christmas - should I try to put a m30 into my '84 318? I really want to go fast.
                        A: No, no and no....

                        Hope that helps

I installed a K300 cam on my 335i, and it's running a bit better... Still haven't tuned it proper, though.. Also replacing my 3.25 diff for a 3.73, I'm way outgeared.

Anyways, if you wanna sell a 335i, it's a market specific car only. Like, the person buying it has to know what it is, like it, and know how much work you've put into it. Chances of that happening are slim to none...

My swap cost me like $400... But I had the engine and transmission already, so I guess that helped. Either way, I think on average the M30 swap is cheaper.
