    M30 questions

Im starting my M30 swap into my 325e. It is a M30 B35 out of a 91' 535i. Im building a track car (AutoX, circuit race etc.) but I want to it be somewhat streetable. I don't have to pass emissions out here so thats not a problem so street legal isn't an issue. The car is gutted and a roll cage and two racing seats will be put in. I'll make the car as light at possible without it being too unsafe with the extra power.

I have the head built already. Port and polished, 3 angle valve job, double valve springs (race), and the stock cam (would like a 290 duration or so). The block is stock for now and waiting to be taken to the machine shop. I have a few questions about the engine.

    1) What should I have done while it's there?
2)How big of a bore? (The car will remain N/A if I can get the horsepower I want).
    3) Would 250 wheel horsepower be obtainable N/A?
    4) Would stroking be a good upgrade?
    5) Are there any other upgrades I should look at doing to the engine while its out of the car?
    6) What transmission should I look to get?

I'm looking to squeeze as much horsepower as I can out of this engine. I still want it to actually idle at stop lights because I would be driving this on nice weekend days and to the track. My goal from research is 250-260 RWHP N/A if possible. I am not looking for top end speed. 130MPH is good enough. I am looking for acceleration. I know turbocharging would be the way to go for high hp numbers but I would like to keep it N/A.

    Thanks for any input!

The B35 runs 9.5:1 compression pistons and has a 92mm bore. All of the 300+hp M30s I have seen have been running high compression, 300+ degree cam, and either a trio of 45DCOEs (I can help you obtain these for a little less than retail) or some fancy engine management. I believe 270 to 280bhp would be attainable with a 290 cam and higher compression. Ireland Engineering and Korman still sell M30 stroker kits I think... A stroked 10.5:1 compression B35 with a 290 cam, a good chip (Jim Conforti) and some good headers should probably come close to 280-290, but to crack 300bhp (your goal of around 250rwhp) you may need more aggressive pistons (11:1?), a hotter cam, and some way to adjust fuel mixture and spark timing. Someone still builds a 3700 Rally Sport engine, I can't seem to recall the name right now, but they claim numbers similar to what I have listed. The 3900 that they used to build (I think they only do the S38 that big anymore) was supposed to be a beast...

I love N/A engines, I'm building one for my Euro 6 series, but for your goal you may want to consider a TCD turbo kit. On a stock us Spec B34 (8:1 compression, 260 cam, 185hp and 215ft/lbs) the stage 1 kit provides around 280rwhp and 300+rwtq on around 9.5psi if I am remembering correctly. It's a bolt on kit, very well reviewed and costs a little over $3800.

And just for the sake of saying it, even a modestly built M30 will be putting down way too much torque for an E30 unless you figure out how to fit some big ass tires under it!

Edit: Metric Mechanic is the place to get the crazy M30s.

True story. I bought one from Todd. Great guy btw. I ended up selling it because it was too much power (300RWHP @ 7psi non-intercooled). I didn't know how to handle it. I agree with euroshark. Nothing is better than a N/A M30 engine, but as an added bonus, I have a JBL 11.5# flywheel and 3.73LSD. I love that combo.

Thanks for the input! I might go with a 299 cam if it would idle alright. I found some 16X8" wheels for the rear which would help the traction issue (would roll the fenders). Could you run 11:1 compression on pump gas? I would probably go with a stand alone if I could get more out of it. I'm planning on a small bore soon. I have a friend who can give me a good deal at a machine shop. I'd really like to go N/A with this build and once I get the hang of it, do a turbo project on another car. M30's are a dime a dozen in this area. I'd like to go with an S38 but they are just too expensive for just the engine. I found one in the area for $5500. I know thats a good price since it has 87,000 miles on it but I can't put up that kind of money right now.

Too bad Korman only wants about 18K for a built stroker, and would be a pain in the ass to sell just parts.

I'm not sure, probably $100 less each or so.

Looks like I'm probably going with a TCD Stage 1 kit. I found some 16X9"' wheels for the car so that should help get that power to the ground. I want to get about 300hp to the wheels if possible which sounds reasonable with this kit and head work.
