    what trans?

Hey guys I have a 1990 325is 5 speed. What trans does my car have? And for the m30 swap I have read that both the getrag 260, and 265 will work. Is this true?

Ok, the engine in your car now is an m20 with an m20 gearbox getrag 240, 260, 265 not sure whats in your "is" but I know for sure that no m20 gearbox will bolt up to the m30. You have to get a m30 getrag gearbox.

    I vote you get a getrag 265 out of a e24 635csi or something!

Correct, M20 transmissions don't fit the M30. The confusion comes from the fact that there is a 260 for the M20, and a 260/5 and 260/6 for the M30s which were found on 533i / 633CSi, and 535i / 635CSi respectively. The 265 found in many E24s and E23s is arguably the best transmission for handling a lot of torque, but the 260/6 is much more common and nearly as capable unless you are building a 600hp turbo motor or something.

Also, the 265 (all of them I've actually see with my own eyes - not saying every one of them) have a removable bell-housing. It makes the swap a bit easier. BTW - the e30 m3 has a G265 - so s14.net is a handy source for that.

Getrag 262 is almost the same as 265 in M3, not easy to come by, though.

M10 transmission (Getrag 240) can also be fitted but it won't handle the torque for long..

It's true, I also have heard that gearboxes connected with m10's will bolt up to a big six!

Depending on what motor position you go, you can keep your stock trans and stock driveshaft length!!

Oh you crazy kids... The M10, M30, S14, and S38 are all derived from the same block and that is why they will accept the same transmissions!! I love you guys :)

ok heres a question to add to, seeing as how one can never get a straight answer... say im using a 260 out of a 87 535 in motor position 3, using funkmasta's mounts. what drive shaft should i use??? the front half of the 535 drive shaft didnt fit. the measurement from trans flange to LSD flange is 4' 9" and from the LSD to the CSB is 2' 1" any thoughts???

535 front part, 325 rear part. Get front part shortened (~75-100mm) and whole thing balanced.

I have a 262CR in my 635CSi. They were optional in euro spec cars. Very rare!
