    Started my m30 swap.

Started today, removed old m20 and box and started on the mount plates for the m30.

    Proof:

Bottom left is G265(m30), up from that is G260(m20), Up again is m20b23, and the m30b35!

An interesting thing I found out today, The m20 starter bolts up to the m30 block fine, the m20b23 flywheel also bolts up fine, I'm starting to think that my m20 flywheel could have worked? Can anyone tell me I'm crazy for thinking this!?
However, comparing the two flywheels (m30, m20) the m30 is slightly larger and the clutch kit I have for the m30 flywheel does not fit the m20 flywheel as it's slightly smaller.

More (crappy = mobile phone) progress pictures tomorrow!

i swear if you finish before me I'm going to kill myself.

haha no but good luck, I can't wait to see how this turns out. As far as the starter thing, I'm trying to remember if my m20 starter bolted up to my m30, and i think it did, but the m30 starter is like 1.5 kw and the m20 is like something weird like 1.4 kw. Or at least the 325i one is.

Not sure about compatabiltiy, but the m20b23 flywheel weighs about 15 lbs (vs 24 for the b25 wheel) so if you can use it, it's a nice lightweight flywhel upgrade.

If I recall correctly, the M30 flywheel is slightly smaller than the M20?

You can not use an M20 flywheel on the M30, because the ring gear will get in the way of the starter pinion

I'll double check on the sizes today.

What if I used the m20 starter on the m30 block coupled with the m20 flywheel?

The only reason I care about this is because I have a starter out of the e34 535i auto (seems, both auto and manual flywheels in the e34 have the same ring gear and use the same starter) But I'm using a 635Csi single mass flywheel and it has a completely different amount of teeth on it compared to the e34's auto flywheel.

So, would it be safe to say that I can use the e24 m30 635Csi's starter? Will it bold to my e34 535i m30 block?

          Cheers guys!

Got the m30 and G265 in today.... Then pulled it back out, then back in, and back out!
Making engine mounts isn't as easy as I thought, It's not really the engine that is the hassle, it's me making the bracket plates - getting half way though then changing my mind and redoing them completely! Oh well.... Pics!

Engine going in for first time (note : bellhousing bolted to back of engine [:)])

Engine half way down but with the transmission on this time:

                More tomorrow
                Cheers guys!

Hey funk, Is this to say that all big six starters are also interchangeable? What I mean is, will the starter from the e24 635Csi I got the flywheel off fit my e34 535i m30 block with the 6 series flywheel bolted to it?

Unfortunatly during the whole in - out process the back end off my valve cover has been scratched :(

They are definitely interchangeable as far as the pinion goes, but I am not 100% regarding the mounting, and electrically they are DEFINITELY different.
