    Advice on buying a 325ix

I'm thinking of buying 89 325ix. It is in excellent mechanical shape with all the needed repair/replacement for that mileage. The only problem is that it is an automatic and I would prefer a manual. Any opinion on the performance of the automatic transmissions in xi's? Maybe I should not be so quick to reject it, but I have just always had manuals and I can't imagine anything else. How much gas milage do you lose?

I currently have a 90 325i with a tight manual transmission. Can I switch them? I read something on a post about the clutch/break assembly being different for "air bag vs. non-air bag" cars. I'm not sure what that means, but that would be my situation--the 90 has an air bag and the 89 does not.
