    9000rpm

My tach is off. It acts like it has a 4cyl tach in it because it redlines around 9000rpm, but I have tried 2 different 6cyl tachs and they both do this.

How do I fix this? Could it have anything to do with my cars stock 4500rpm redline?

hahaha, I'd say leave it like that - bragging rights!!!

"yeah, my car red lines at 9000Rpm"

    Sorry for OT.

You may need the correct coding plug for the instrument cluster.

What exactly is this coding plug? I have heard about it but don't know what it is. It has to do with whether you have a 4cyl or a 6cyl, right?

Also, both the tachs I have put in are 7k, not eta ones.

There should be different plugs in back of the tachs. Look in back of your eta tach and compare it to the back of the 318 ones. I believe the plug looks something like a relay.
Sorry don't remember off the top of my head.

I know the tachs are out of 325i's, though; I pulled them myself. Don't you only need to change the coding plug if you go from a 4 to a 6 or vice-versa?

The coding plug plugs into the front of the cluster behind the lower trim for the cluster.

late clusters = coding plug on the front lower right
early clusters = coding plug on the rear side

Little white plug on the bottom right of the cluster.
