    Large Case Differential

Does anyone have experience putting in a large case diff into an e30? Besides swapping the rear cover, it should be bolt on?

will the cover fit is what I am wondering...

I am remembering something being posted on Mye28 about it and for some reason I am thinking you can't but I maybe be wrong...

on one I remember the drain plugs are located one atop the other and on the other one faces rear and one towards the drivers side so I don't know if that would be a problem...

The cover won't, thats why the e30 cover goes on right? I'm just curious about the physical size of the differential

Just curious to know why you wanna put in the large case diffy....If Otis is putting out ~370ish @ the wheels with a medium case i think it should be fine.

The larger diffs have a different bolt pattern and stuffs and my not even fit in with out doing some custom work.

it can be done, a friend of mine who races E30s has a large case diff and he has one on his E30, I'll need to ask him how he did that so I can share with you guys.

Why not? I know the medium will work but I'd rather have something that I know will work for 10x longer once I put in the turbo.

But like you said, if there's alot of custom work I wont bother.

The large case does not share a cover-size/pattern with the medium case.

The cover will not transfer from medium to large case...

The physical size of the diff is much larger than a medium case... I can post some differences if you guys would like.

The large case DOES have the same bolt pattern on the mounting of the diff as the medium case. However the rear mounting point on the E30 is not even possible with the large case. In the E28 and E24, it is accounted for, from the factory, and the E28/4 rear cover compensates for it.

It is not the amount of "custom" work involved... it is the is the unnecessary cost and PITA. welding in new rear mounts, etc.
While the large case is a bolt-in for E23/4/8, it IS NOT for an E30.

It can be done, but Major PITA, and... arguably no real need?
The E30 is light, and compared to the high power and heavy weight of the E24 M6, and E28 M5, the large case is a little unnecessary.

I have a e28 3.25lsd sitting in my room, and I want to put it into my e30.

I had both my e30's "8 bolt" rear cover diff and my e28's "8 bolt" rear cover diff next to each other and can't remember if the bolt pattern lined up (to swap the rear covers). I know the input flange was fine (from the e30's tailshaft) the output flanges were definitely wrong (swap for e30 ones).

Question is, Is there two types of 8 bolt rear covers? (one slightly bigger than the other)? What diff is in the e28, large or medium?

After all the threads I've read on this subject I'm still rather confused:|
