N62 is a good motor for the most part. Just dont give it to much boost and your golden.

Boost isn't the question, cost is.

RickSloan, good point, although I'd just as easily opt for the M106. K27, forged internals, Motronic, 8.0:1 CR, etc. etc.

I have seen a few go for around the same price as an s38.

It's an odd swap though. A brand new, super smooth V8 would be a wiring nightmare in an E30. An S38, not so much.

The regular old US spec B34 has the same forged pieces as the M106 and 8:1 compression ratio. The only big difference with the M102 or M106 is the oil squirters for the pistons.

A turbo M30 really is hard to beat. You get a nice fat power curve and a freaking mountain of torque even at low boost levels... And you don't even need to think about touching the block until you start getting really crazy with the boost.

Ah, I didn't know that the B34 had the same forged pieces as the M102/6. I think the only difference aside from the oil squirters in the pistons are the sodium (or Nimonic as I have heard before) filled valves which supposedly dissipate heat better (from what I understand.)

I believe they have knock sensors too.

this is true, but the stock b34 seems like the best to me still because of the fact you can put out loads of power without ever really "needing" to open the bottom end.

Well if you cant afford to pay Jandersen 50 bucks then you cant afford the swap.
