BMW>Alfa - Help me find a shell for my next 335i!!

Ok guys... here's the deal: we are building a track car for work, and naturally it's going to be an Alfa Romeo. Being that I'm the only BMW guy at the shop there always seems to be a little rib-poking and whatnot about who built the best cars... Of course WE know the answer to that question, but I think it's time to finally show my co-workers what's up. The car we are building (well, I am building) is an Alfa 75 (Milano here in the states) that will be powered by a bored and stroked V6 that is around 3.5 liters. It's going to have big brakes, big torsion bars, sport springs for the rear, big sway bars, etc. and should be pretty quick since a base un-stripped 75 is around 2800lbs and this V6 has dynoed at 208rwhp. My plan is to build a 335i to match this Alfa when we do our track events. If nothing else it will be fun.

I'm looking for an '84 or '85 318i or 325e. I'd like a two door but a four door is alright too. I've got two engines at my disposal, a nice B35 out of a '92 735i and a fairly low mileage euro B34 out of my '83 635CSi. Either one would be getting a cam, chip, and headers and that would probably get it right around the same amount of power at the wheels with a lot more torque (the Alfa 3.5 dynoed at 190ft/lbs at the wheels) so I have a feeling that the 335i would have a nice advantage. I'm also going to need a Getrag 260/6, so if anyone has any leads on a car or even a shell that is remotely close to Colorado or a transmission I would love to hear about them!

How come you want an 84' or 85'?

    Is the Milano like this:

Well, posterity, you will never know what it cost us to preserve your freedom. I only hope that you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.

        A couple of reasons:

        a) The early bodies are the lightest

        b) I'm a sucker for euro bumpers so I'll probably end up going euro, maybe even with the Mtech 1 stuff

        c) In Colorado an '84 qualifies as a classic, so if I can pass the emission test with the stock engine I can get classic plates and never have to get it tested again

        Farbin, I'm sending a PM.

Nicademus, yep, that's a Milano. Ours is going to be a little meaner than that though.

I know you have a liking to the early bodied cars, but you should really start with an '87 ETA. Find one w/ a snapped T-belt and go from there. Reasons for this are:

                    1. Already have the proper driveshaft for the swap
                    2. Can easily run Motronic 1.1/1.3 without having to splice into the fusebox (use lengthened 325i harness that plugs directly into the fusebox)

Obviously ABS will make it weigh more, but shouldn't be too bad.

                    Just my $.02

'87 is cool too. I need the early rear arches for tire clearance... :)

                        you want that M10 trans???

as far as swapping ease with the new harness... honestly its a moot point. Mine was plug and play with the 635csi harness no making anything longer. I just had to splice at the connector but i chopped up the eta connector on the motor side so it still plugs the same.

Plus you have obviously delt with fuse box stuff many times, and it should be an issue.

glad to see your showing them how its done there at work ;)

you could always by speedhops as well, but im sure you want to creat this beast your self!

Somebody wanting the light roller(85 318i) for a project like this should let me know, I have one that has a clean title, but will end up getting parted very soon otherwise.

Farbin, if I had a good way to get it transported I'd take it... Unfortunately the shipper I have used three times won't do a car that can't move itself. ...And like I said, my flatbed gets about 8mpg so picking it up wouldn't be very practical. I appreciate the offer though!

Robbie, I'll think about the 240 but I might already have a 260/6 lined up. I'll let you know! I thought about Speedhops car but I would definitely rather build it myself. His is very nice and looks to be well executed though.

I completely understand. Maybe someone will get to it before total decommission.
