M30 tuning questions : Cam + MAF + Chip with stock exhaust

    Hi to all,

I was just wondering about M30 tuning. I have made some research but couldnt find a satisfying answer yet.

If you have a stock Euro M30b35 in good shape, you have 211HP with Motronic 1.3.

you can install a chip ( EAT or J.Conforti ) and gain some power and low end torque, increase your RPM limit.

    Question 1 :

If in addition you install a lets say 280deg camshaft from Dbilas or Schrick, will you have to install a special/different chip, due to the change of intake/exhaust valves timing, or the standard EAT/Conforti chip will be enough ? or do you have to switch to piggyback or Standalone ECU ??

    Question 2 :

If again in addition you add a MAF conversion, the Airflow signal will be different than from an AFM, so a special chip is required ( Miller have some ), but can those MAF adapted chips take care of a different than original camshaft ?
Are they just converting the MAF signal or are they also improving the fuel/timing of the engine on the complete range of the engine ??

Now I believe that if you have a MAF and a Canshaft, best would be to go standalone ECU, to have full control of the settings and get the best of the engine...

For info the engine I talk about would be rebuils before being dropped in an E30 touring ( mine:D ), and I would like to have around 220-230HP. What do you recommend, is the EAT chip will be enough.
The gearbox will mostly be the standard Getrag 260/6, with a S3.64 or S3.73 diff ( 3.73 may be less usable as I plan to use the car regularly on highways at around 80mph ).

What gains can be expected with a EAT chip + 280 cam + MAF conversion ? Exhaust will be stock E34 535i manifolds, downpipes, cats, and probably an E36M3 muffler

I would like to keep the engine bay as factory look as possible, not to have any questions from the local authorities here in France...I want a sleeper car, maybe with a 316i badge at the back for the fun.
The good point with the touring is that the back weighs around 80-100lbs more at the back than the 2 door, so it compensate nicely for the Engine wight increase.

Sorry for the long post, I really appreciate your help, and enjoy reading about the fabulous swaps that have been done here.

Great infos on here, will help me a great deal when I start my swap !

    Cheers / Pierre

I visited Miller Performance and asked the same questions, and the chip that comes with their kit converts the MAF signal & improves the fuel/timing maps. I know that they do custom tailored chips to go with the MAF kit (if you have a camshaft, headers, hi-comp, etc ....), but I am not sure if they can burn the modified chip for you given the specifications of your engine over the phone, or if they have to tune it on their in-house dyno. Best to call and ask them to be sure.

Call Miller and ask about the WAR chip...
