Cracked cylinder head

I have a cracked E34 M30B35 cylinder head.


I also have an E28 M30B35 cylinder head. I am thinking to getting the earlier spec one pressure tested and skimmed, to fit a later type M30B35 engine.

From the look of the head, its looks restricted compared to the E34 version. Am I right in thinking this?


It will save me the hassle of getting another cylinder head if I can just use this earlier spec one. Any info on this would be great.

E28 used the M30B34, not B35. The early head has smaller chambers, so your compression will be increased, and it doesn't flow as well as the later head. Exhaust ports are different (not correct, see below), so your manifolds won't match very well. You could use it, but it will be far from optimal. There's more info here: www.mye28.com

Actually the ports are only different on the intake side. The exhaust side is the same on the B34 and B35. 100% right otherwise. B35 parts are a bit better than B34 hardware.

Ah, that's right. The exhaust manifolds are different, I thought the ports were too.

has anyone ever gone b34 head on a b35 block to see if the higher compression would have any benefits?

I was under the impression that it would not work (B34 head on B35 block). But I can't seem to remember why right off the top of my head. I know if you go the other way (B35 head on B34 block) you get ridiculously low compression ~7.5:1 if I remember correctly.

The above b34 head is in very bad condition. On close inspection it looks like it has been badly repaired at some point. I have noticed a few pin size holes in some of the chambers.

Conclusion; Two useless cylinder heads!

Solution; Prepare the one I purchased today ready for pressure test/skim. Fingers crossed 3rd time lucky!!
