    Project: Yet Another M30

    Skip down... this is long.

    Hello Everyone!

So I've been on here for a while, mostly making non-contributing comments on other peoples threads... biding my time... and its getting close for me to start a project of my own.

    Brief Self History:
Got my first e30 as a gift (from an old lady i did yard work for that i think had the hots for me :D) but it was beyond my 16 year old abilities, time, or finances to fix. Also my parents wouldn't let me use their garage... Bought my second one a while later (last November) it was a resprayed 1986e 4 door 5spd. Love her... even if she's an Eta.

Last June I bought a 87 is from my brother's friend in MN to use as a project. The car was used as a auto body student's learning tool and is now pretty much rust free. The paint looks really good from about 10 feet away... (he was a student after all) and once i get some money i'll be doing a respray. Staying Bronzit Beige.

    Plans:
eta: staying mostly stock. Maybe some rally style lights and a chip. Tucked diving boards... OEM ride height (Rhode Island roads are F***ing terrible and the car is going to be the winter car)... maybe a snowboard rack.... and added winter package stuff if i can get it. I'm thinking a heated rear seat.. because if anyone doesn't know: e30 back seats are way better than a hotel.

is: euro bumpers, Alpina style rims (I've loved them since I was a kid) and an m30b35 to start. We'll see where we go from there.

Fun side stories: (long but interesting... up to you to read)
Bought the '87is in June in Minnesota.. but couldn't get out there till Christmas to get it... so my brother (a 1.8T guy) drove it around for a while and fixed some of the random problems and I met him in Indiana (long story) to pick it up. On the drive home i was in Ohio and i got cut-off and had to swerve hard to the left... right into a pothole ... and ripped off the luggs of my front left wheel at ~70mph. Managed to get off the highway and find the wheel... and was towed to a 24 18wheeler shop. The guy there said "I don't know German cars... so you can help if you want" We ended up pulling the bearing and rethreading the 4 pretty beat up holes from the back, remounted it and i took it for a spin: ran fine. no shimmy... no alignment issues (well.. no more than there were to begin with) So the only real lasting issues that i've found thus far: the fender took a nice hit from the wheel when it came off... thats going to be replaced... the wheel got pretty chewed up when it hit the jersey barrier... the exit sign... and then i beat the crap out of the exit sign with it while waiting for a tow... but they're sportmaxers and will be replaced... so i can live with it. Latest Adventures: The axle and wheel bearing on the rear right of the eta went, so i'm in the middle of replacing those... and the other day it was snowing and I had to take someone home (in the 'is ) and the car drifted at less than 15 mph into a curb in a left turn from a light ... the control arm is toast.... but i won't be able to get more of an idea of what else is wrong until i finish the eta this weekend and can get the is into the garage. I have spring break next week though, so I should get it all straightened out.

    Pictures

Eta on the day i bought it...

'is (my brother took these... i can't take pictures for beans)

The plan: I've acquired an m30b35 that had 120k kilometers on it as well as its trans, and the ecu. I still have a lot to buy, but the plan is to do the swap in the beginning of summer. More posts to come! (and none as long as this.... sorry to make you read so much.... I don't know if i did a very good intro when i first joined)

Also: i've done compression tests on engines that were in cars... but my m30 is not. I have the full wiring harness and am told that i need to send power to the starter, ground the engine, and power to the ignition wire... (i'm told its black-and-yellow) but i don't want to cut apart the wires to find which one i'm supposed to use.. does anyone know what plug number it is?

also: can that be off of the same source as the power to the starter? i was just thinking of using my battery from my eta.

    Thanks for the help!

      Hi Greg!

To test the compression, just hook a jumper pack up to the starter- no need for ignition as you won't have spark plugs in.

.... Thanks Byron! (i guess i should have figured that...) also: what are you up to next week? I'll be pulling the control arm off of the eta if you want to come by for free food/beer and help

message to all r3v members: if ever you need free pizza/beer: come over when i'm working on something... you'll get all you can eat... and enough beer to think i'm a good singer.

Make sure you hold the throttle body open, you get a way more accuate reading.
          Nice car too.

progress has been made! (i'm in NH with my brother snowboarding and he was in an accident and the only way i can keep from going crazy while he's in surgery is to surf the internet like an idiot. he shattered his tibia and fibula (sp) and is getting a titanium rod installed... so my numbers may be a bit off b/c i'm a bit worked up at the moment)

a few days ago Dr. Mike came over and instead of just telling me how to disconnect the lines for my breaks in my eta... he pretty much did it for me. then he moved on to the 'is and pulled the control tower (which was fine) and pulled the control arm to put on another one. (pictures once i'm back in RI) then we did a compression test on the m30 and all cylinders were ~160 except for one was at ~140 (the engine has been sitting for a while and i'm told that that last number should climb back up once the engine has been run a bit..... again.. exact numbers to come once i'm back home

cliff notes: i have two working cars again, my brother is in the hospital, and my m30 seems to be in fighting shape.

next on the to-buy list: motor mounts, water pump and basic gaskets... radiator and coolant/washer fluid reservoirs that will work with the m30.

WTB: engine mounts to do a m30b35 (anyone got suggestions?)

also: what all should i do to the engine before i install it? which gaskets should i do now ... or just let sleeping dogs alone?

WTB engine mounts for m30b35 to go into my 87 'is -> please PM me

suggestions on wiring? I've heard that there's a jumper that you can buy to go from the engine to the plug on the fire wall... worth it?

to be honest: i was a little confused that i didn't see the link on this page http://r3vlimited.com/board/index.php perhaps it could be my own ineptitude.... if its possible to relocate a thread thats fine... or i could start a new one if there's a preferred area... but i really don't see a project section..

                          Pulling the motor next Tuesday/Wednesday.

feeler: Anyone have any interest in m20 stuff from my engine? The head is is rough shape and the trans. may be accounted for... other than that let me know.
-Everything will be priced to move... I'll be taking pictures of everything worth selling, but I'm just curious if there is any interest.

                            Progress!!!

Thanks in large part (huge part, really) to Byron, Mike and Alex my very tired m20 now resides 6 feet from my e30. Today will be painting the engine bay, replacing the clutch master cylinder, and then putting the m30 in once all of the gaskets i bought go in. Pictures will come tonight... finished last night at 2 am and I want to get back out there :)
