    M30 Starter problem

[b35 m30 e34] Hi, im having alot of problems with my E30 M30´s starter:sad:. when i bought the engine it came without a starter and it had an auto trans flywheel so I bought the manual gearbox (260/6) and the manual doublemass flywheel (which was supposed to be from a m30 b35). I tryied an m30 e34 small starter I got from ebay and it got jammed (gears wont fit the flywheel nor would it make it turn) and the 318i big starter (m10) did the same. i tryied a m20 big starter and the gears seem to fit the flywheel but dont completely reach it so it only turns the engine for a sec and then spins hitting the flywheel, so I made a combination of the m10 starter housing (which goes furher into the flywheel than the m20´s) with the m20 gear and it did work but didnt sound ok like if it was forced to turn, wasnt smooth but worked ok for some time (maby its weaker) but now I think my starter went bad or lost strength because it spins grinding the flywheel but never spins the engine. Im very confused!!!!! do I have an M30 flywheel???? does a M20 Flywheel fit the m30??? the clutch is working fine though. what starter´s fit the m30´s b35? Thanks alot for your help :D I seem to be the only one with starter problems

Hey mate, I had similar troubles when I got my motor too - my m30b35 came with auto flywheel and auto starter motor.
Check the sizes between the, "said m30" duelmass flywheel too the m20 flywheel you have. The overall size of the m20 flywheel should be slightly bigger (which is why the flywheel wont work on the m30, I've been there tried that...)

It is possible you may have damaged the ring gear on the flywheel the solinoid or the pinion on the starter.

Whatever flywheel you use it is best to get the starter (and clutch) from the same car/engine it came off.
I used an e24 635Csi single mass flywheel - and the same starter that came in the donor car.

    hope this helps alittle

Ok thanks Doughnut ill try to meassure them but would the m20´s flywheel and clutch setup fit the m30 and work ok besides from the starter issue? cause if mine is it does!! is there any other way to check if its the m30´s flywheel without taking the engine apart like... the gear size that should fit, oh man...I hope its an M30´s because here in Honduras there are only about 8 cars in total including 5´s and 7´s with the M30 so NO LOCAL PARTS AT ALL!!!! and gets worst for manual parts thanks alot for the info didnt have a clue the m20´s where bigger! oh and another thing which has me thinking.... is the m30 auto starter the same as the manual M30 one???

This I dont know, but on realoem.com it only lists one starter motor for both the auto flywheel ring gear and manual flywheel ring gear

From memory I can't remember why the m20 flywheel wouldn't work, the starter was one reason and I think the input shaft on the G265 i was using wouldn't fit the m20 clutch disc.

          A m30 auto has a "ring gear" - no fly wheel. Any e12, e28, m5 e24, e32 will work. Trick set up is a m5/533 wheel, and clutch - With a m5 guibo.

So is it safe to say that engines equipped with an automatic transmission use the wight of the torque converter bolted to the "ring gear" as a "flywheel?"

Saying that an m30 auto has no flywheel would just confuse people eh?

Flexplate, although I don't think that's what BMW calls it.

So just to be clear, the auto starter will work
                          with a single mass flywheel?

I can only tell you what I have. I have a Auto starter(e24 automatic), with a e28 flywheel and clutch. It all bolted right up.

People do not use M20 flywheels on m30s!!
