    Cooling fan troubleshooting

I am trying to troubleshoot a potential cooling issue with my 91' 318is. I can't figure out if my gauge is reading incorrectly or if the car is actually overheating. My understanding is that the auxiliary fan should kick in when the coolant temperature reaches 196 degrees at low speed or when AC button is pushed. High speed fan should kick in when coolant temperature reaches 210 degrees. Currently the low speed fan will only kick in when I push the AC button. I was not able to observe it kick in automatically. The temperature gauge was all the way in the red.

If I short out the pins on the temp sender unit the fan does kick on which makes me think the temp in the rad isn't getting hot enough for the fan to kick in. Is my thermostat perhaps not opening?

How can I check if the gauge is reading accurate?

Is it normal for the small lower rad hose to stay cool while all the other hoses are hot?
