help! car having problems running after broken alt/fan belt

so I was driving yesterday and my alt/fan belt broke in my m42 so I got a new belt and put it on but now it will not run right. It will idle a little rough but not too bad but when driven it lags badly up to 2500rpm then accelerates like normal. When it goes back to idle it stalls. The check engine light goes on and off intermittently and if held steady at any rpm it will run rough. My initial thought is that the alternator is bad on a side note I just put in an electric fan and was also wondering how to disengage the clutch fan (snip a wire somewhere or something) or if that could be a problem too (the new fan was installed after the belt broke I was wondering if it might be the fan clutch having issues) please let me know what you think thanks!

There are no wires to the factory mechanical "fan clutch".... If you installed an electric fan and want to delete the factory fan:

    1) remove fan shroud
    2) remove fan from engine (this requires a 32mm wrench for fan nut and also the holding of water pump pulley so it will not spin - spin off fan clockwise to remove)

If your CEL is illuminating, turn the key to "ON" without starting vehicle, stomp on the gas pedal 5x consecutively and then the DME will start blinking the DME w/ any stored codes. Count your blinks, look up that 4 digit error code and post your findings...

My only idea would be, if the fan belt broke and whipped around in the engine bay - there are (2) immediate sensors located around the pulleys and fan belts - 1) the crank positioning sensor and 2) the cam sensor. If the belt hit either wire (or both) that go to each of these sensors, it's quite possible 1 or both of them were damaged. Even if the exterior casing of the black wires to each looks good, the actual thin wiring within the casings can be damaged. If either sensor is damaged, the results will be drivability problems, hard start problems, stalling, rough running and/or possible no start issues.

You really need to extract any stored codes to really know what's going on...

thanks for the detailed answer it ended up being the mass air sensor went bad and a byproduct of the whole ordeal was that I found out my alternator was bad as well. I was able to pick up a whole new intake, alternator and side trim from my local guy at sports and imports and everything is running great now
