driveshaft - rebuild

my car makes a cracking noise when i brake hard. my mechanic told me that the driveshaft is making that noise and i need to replace it.

what's the ballpark labor figure for rebuilding a driveshaft?
brand new driveshafts go for 342$ plus shipping on line.

am i better off buying a new one or rebuilding my current one?
