    Starter.. ugh

    So the starter that was on my '91 318is took a dive.. literally. Apparently the tailbracket was never bolted on correctly, and one of the bellhousing/mounting bolts went missing, meaning the mouting ear on the starter sheared off.

    Upon going to replace said broken starter, I've realized that the upper mounting bolt is nearly impossible to get to. I can get the bolt in from the transmission side, but how the hell do you get to the nut side? Am I going to have to take the intake manifold off the car??

    Pic of the carnage;

    Also, the tailbracket doesn't seem to line up with the threaded hole on the engine mount bracket. Are there different tail brackets for the 4 and 6 cylinder cars? I'm thinking this might be the wrong one..

    The M42 and M20 starters have different pinion gears.

    I've changed mine a few times... just use a long closed ended wrench for the nut.
