    1991 318is?

Hello all, I've been searching for a 318 for a while and I found one that is local. I haven't seen it yet, I am going tomorrow, but had a few questions. The engine has 250k miles on it, and there is a small leak, he thinks it is coming from the timing chain tensioner cover? How long do these engines normally last and is this leak a big problem? I would like to do an engine swap a little later down the road, but this will be my dd for a while. When i' go take a look at it, whats a good way to tell if the leak is actually coming from the timing chain? Thanks in advance!

If it was me, I'd bring a can of Brake Parts cleaner and spray down the area and dry it up with a rag. Then after you take the car for a test drive see if there's any new oil there.

I looked at one, owner said same thing, leak was actually from the block that mounts the oil filter to the main block, thats an easy fix
I did not buy it, as the same week, my now new to me vert came up for sale, same money

I'm guessing my car has about that many mile and I track it regularly. Mine also had a leak coming from the filter block. The seals/gaskets to fix all that isn't expensive at all and doesn't take too long to fix either. Drive it and if it feels solid and smooth run with it.

I've had to fix some coolant issues and a leaking oil filter block but nothing in the motor. I guess its been well maintained and now I just beat it like a rented mule and it just asks for more.
