For what it's worth, that fuel economy seems to reverse at a speed past 70mph. The longer gearing on a 325i seems to make up for the 6 cylinder.
I drive over the speed limit though. And for what I usually drive (~80), even while cruising, you already have a hard time saving gas with the M42. My M30, with no O2 sensor hooked up, a 3.25 welded rear end, would cruise the highway with no problem and pull what I'd figure would be 25-30mpg.
