    Timing chain whine

Just got done doing a full timing chain replacement (guides, tensioner, crank sprocket, etc etc) and I'm getting a whining noise that is definitely coming from the chain area.... Is this normal with all the new components or is there something I should be worried about?

Normal, just went through it myself and after some searching found this.

They had whine when new. I guess we are just use to quiet worn chains and gears.

It looks like this will be a project I'll need to start preparing for for my red 318. Can I ask how many hours it took you?

tehwickerman - This is a common experience and there are discussion on M42club's forum.

herbivor - Depending on experience, perhaps set aside a weekend to go through it. Spend extra time confirming the timing of the chain, cams, sprockets, TDC, etc. The M42club site has useful information where people share their experiences with photos (alignment). The esatclear site was also helpful. The difficulty I incountered was removing the water pump and crank bolt but it is manageable. Good luck.

I used the esatclear site as a guide and the whole project took me a weekend. It was the first major project I had done on any car, ever, though. I did sprockets, chain, guides, t-stat, water pumps, tensioner, and I had the whine when it was done, too. It went away after a thousand miles or so.
